Look out for Nokia’s N96 soon

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Nokia have just announced that the sequel to their N95, the N96 dual slider (has there ever been a more exciting turn of phrase than dual slider?) will be released in North America before the end of the year.

The sleekly gorgeous cell packs an impressive 16MB plus a micro SD slot, 5 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 2.8 inch display and an integrated DVB-H mobile TV tuner.

The only downside? Expect to pay (wait for it…) $895. It’s not yet legal to sell organs for tech, right?

The USB Mixa Tape holds 1GB of sappy love songs

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

A little while back there was the USB stick that came in packaging resembling a mixed tape.  However, all it really was, was a bit of fancy packaging and not much else.  Well this new USB drive resembles a mixed tape all the time.  Instead of just getting sent to you in packaging that looks like it, then once out of it just looks like a boring USB drive.  This one not only comes in the shape of a tape, but it comes decked out in fun stickers too.  Luckily they allow you to choose the stickers and just include them when they ship it out.

To use it, there is a sliding button on the top that when pushed will pop out the USB connector.  So you won’t have that awkward piece sticking out the side all of the time.  The drive is 1GB and will hold up to 250 songs.  Which means if you intend to pass this along to someone special you’ve got plenty of room for cheesy love songs.  The tape is being sold for  £19.99 or about $37.

Sanyo PLV-Z700 LCD projector

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Sanyo has introduced out a new LCD projector for the masses, and although it might be pretty expensive at first glance, the features and functions offered on paper more than make up for the price. The Sanyo PLV-Z700 might be classified as an entry level projector, but it offers a performance that is a class above. How does full High Definition support sound to you over a projector? This model will make use of a 3LCD panel coupled with one of the most advanced lens-shifting technology in the industry, a variable iris and Sanyo’s very own 3D color management system.

The PLV-Z700 is one of Sanyo’s least expensive projectors designed for residential installations, offering a Full HD panel providing 1920 x 1080 resolution from high definition sources such as Blu-ray discs, HD camcorders, a wide variety of video on-demand services plus paid TV services from cable and satellite companies, in addition to terrestrial-based HD broadcasts. Outfitted with an extremely versatile lens-shifting function, the PLV-Z700 can effectively adjust the equivalent of 3 screens vertically and 2 screens horizontally. Combined with the 2x zoom, which allows for an extremely long or short focus, it is possible to create a large screen projection virtually anywhere, even in small rooms such as dens or bedrooms.

Some of the specifications are :-

  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD)
  • Native Aspect Ratio: 16:9
  • Color range: 1.07 billion (10 bit)
  • Brightness: 1,200 ANSI lumens (Dynamic Video Mode)
  • Contrast Ratio: 10,000:1 (Dynamic Video Mode)
  • Projection Lamp: UHP 165W
  • Screen Size: Minimum 40″, Maximum 300″ (with projection distance of approx. 4-60 feet)
  • Projection Lens: Manual Zoom 1-2.0x (f=22.6-45.3mm, F2.0-F3.0)
  • Video Modes: 5 (Brilliant Cinema/Creative Cinema/Natural/Living/Dynamic)
  • Noise output: 21 dBA (Cinema Black Mode)
  • PC I/O: Mini D-sub 15-pin, analog RGB
  • Video Input: HDMI x 2 (ver1.3b w/Deep Color), Component (Y/Cb/Cr) x 2,
  • Composite (RCA) x 1, S-Video x 1
  • Dimensions: 15.75 (W) x 5.75 (H) x 13.6 (D) inches
  • Weight: 16.5 lbs

Interested parties will be able to pick up the Sanyo PLV-Z700 this October for $1,995.

Epson stirs pot, conjures up 4-inch high-res LTPS LCD

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Aug 27th 2008 at 8:22AMIt’s one thing to take good pictures. It’s another to show ‘em off on a good display. Epson Imaging Devices has just made official its new 4-inch high-resolution LTPS LCD, which is featured in the forthcoming P-6000 / P-7000 photo viewers. The diminutive display has an 80-degree viewing angle (from all sides) and covers 94% of the Adobe RGB color gamut. Built upon the Photo Fine Premia technology, Epson is hoping that this newfangled screen will find its way into digital cameras and PMPs so owners can be proud of playing back photo slideshows on the go. Funny thing though — we’re never told just how “high” high-resolution really is. Is the sky the limit, or what?

UK’s Advertising Standards Authority yanks iPhone ad for being misleading

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 27th 2008 at 11:53AMApple’s iPhone 3G ads paint a pretty cheery picture of the device in action, but just as many of you have noted, the omission of Flash and Java means there’s a big difference between what the “the real internet” and what’s on the iPhone — enough so that the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has pulled one of Apple’s latest ads from the airwaves because it claims “all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone.” At least two people complained to the ASA that the ad was misleading because sites that use Flash and Java don’t work on the iphone, and the board agreed, saying that “We concluded that the ad gave a misleading impression of the internet capabilities of the iPhone” because “viewers were likely to expect to be able to see all the content on a web site normally accessible through a PC rather than just having the ability to reach the website.” If we had to guess, we’d say this decision is more likely to prompt Apple to be more careful with its ads in the future rather than ever bring Flash or Java to the iPhone, but you know Adobe is feeling pretty smug right about now. Check the ad after the break.

Nokia 6650 flip coming to AT&T to redeem the N75

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

by Chris Ziegler, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 11:44PM
Well, here’s one we didn’t see coming: it seems that AT&T has wised up to the fact that Americans like their Symbian (well, at least a few of ‘em do, anyway) and wants to keep S60-equipped options on the table. Yes, granted, AT&T is a founding member of the Symbian Foundation, but the proof is in the pudding, and the last Nokia smartphone to land there was the N75 in May of last year — an eternity by mobile standards. More recently, the N75 grew up, got sexy, picked up some brushed metal, and emerged in Europe as the 6550; now, it’s surprisingly and unexpectedly been retooled as the 6650 for North American 3G spectrum. It’s got a 2.2-inch QVGA primary display, 160 x 128 secondary, 2-megapixel cam, AT&T Navigator (which means GPS), push-to-talk support, and HSDPA 850 / 1900 to compliment quadband EDGE. We don’t know exactly when it’s coming, but for S60 fans who cringe at the thought of having to blow several hundred on an unlocked set every time they want some fresh hardware, this should be welcome news.

Dell Inspiron 13 now available build-to-order

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 10:14PM
Dell’s Inspiron 13 made its Wal-Mart debut earlier this month, but now the budget back-to-school lappy is ready for you to trick it factory-style on Dell’s site. Nothing too crazy on the options list, and it looks like you’re stuck with some form of integrated graphics no matter what — but hey, when the most extravagant configuration maxes out at $1,149, you can’t be too picky.
