FCC leaks the Motorola Jay-Z branded headphones

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Here we have the latest item to make its debut via the FCC, a set of Jay-Z branded Motorola headphones. And they have come in a typical FCC fashion, meaning the leak offers a nice decent picture but comes with few details to go along with it.

What we can tell you so far is that these headphones are Motorola made, and are in partnership with Jay-Z. We also know that they are A2DP stereo Bluetooth headphones and feature an external mic.

Of course we are still not sure how much they will retail for, nor do we have any idea of an expected release date. The one bit of good news is that we can be pretty certain that Motorola will not be quite when they officially announce these.

IVYSKIN iPhone case is touch sensitive

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

It is without a doubt that the iphone 3G is one highly desirable device to own, and hence the need to protect it against external knocks and scratches with a case. Unfortunately, instead of picking up a screen protector, why not settle for the IVYSKIN iPhone 3G case that keeps the entire device safe, it also boasts a special material based on Surface Xylo Wave technology which is able to pass the wave of the touch on the outer casing to the touchscreen and henceforth. Perfect for new iPhone 3G owners as well as the original iPhone folk who have yet to make the upgrade.

$50 winner and last weeks coolest gadget

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Last weeks coolest gadget contest in my opinion was one of the best yet. My favourites included:

  • Another flying vehicle (which are always popular) the M400 Skycar
  • The digital pasta timer spoon, an OTT but useful kitchen gadget
  • Periodic Coffee Table, I thought this was simply ingenious.

But how did you vote, onto the results

In a commanding first place with 41% of the votes we have the cell phone jammer, looks like it’s not just us who don’t like listening to other people on the phone.

I hate being stuck on a train when some idiot is yelling down a phone (for some reason callers need to shout when in confined public spaces), this nifty gadget fixes that, the Portable cell phone Jammer. Now if only they’d make one to work with MP3 players.

In joint second place with 71 votes apiece we have the M400 Skycar and ColorRight.

We’ve mentioned the concept of a flying car before on Gaj-it with the Pal-V Flying Car. Well this concept is obviously the way of the future as the guys over at Moller have designed their own four-seat flying car which is aimed to take to the skies within three years

In third place (well maybe fourth as second was tied) we have the cool periodic table.

Check out this geeky coffee table, the Periodic Coffee Table, this bound to get some attention, when your friends come round for a coffee.

The Periodic Coffee table measures 4 ft x 2.5 ft x 16 inches, and if features all the 92 natural elements as well as all of the man made elements actually built in to the table.

Thanks again to all entrants, voters and commentators. The next weekly coolest gadgets will be up for voting this Friday (write about gadgets and want to enter, here’s how), see you there.

This weeks randomly drawn voter who wins the $50 Amazon voucher is Drew, congratulations Drew we’ll be in touch.

Even though ColorRight was in second place it had a very suspicious voting and commenting pattern, we’ve spoken to the submitter, PhotographyBay, and believe they had nothing to do with the suspicious voting so they have been left in second place. This is a fun contest and we’d like to keep it that way but please play fair.

Lenovo’s S9, S10 IdeaPads hit the FCC

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

This latest FCC showing comes not as not much of a surprise, but seems to almost be a formality, a right of passage so to speak. We have already seen the IdeaPad S9 and S10 a few times, but at least this listing makes them a little more official.

An interesting item to note that has come from this particular listing is that it covers both the S9 and S10 IdeaPad, and it also has just one User Guide, which just goes to show how little difference there will be between the two models. The main difference of course would be the display size. The S9 has an 8.9-inch display while the S10 has the slightly larger 10-inch display.

Otherwise things seem pretty standard here although there is a nice “hard drive/RAM panel” on the bottom of the notebooks, which would lead one to believe that both of those items will be easily serviced by the end-user.

Google wants to use the white space

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Google seems to be advocating a lot of things recently, with the latest being their “Free The Airwaves” campaign.  Free The Airwaves is about asking the FCC to free allow anyone to use unused airwaves that currently carry analog TV signals.  About 3/4 of these waves are currently unused, and Google wants to leverage these waves for the good of everyone.  Its idea is to use it for cheap and easy wireless internet access, of course.

FCC engineers will be testing the airwaves that could carry Wi-Fi, with the ban on using the “white space” airwaves possibly coming by the end of the year.  This would be great news for just about everyone.  There are still places in the United States that don’t have access to broadband (shocking to realize sometimes, I know), and these waves should already be there anyway.  It should just be a matter of buying a device that can connect to the airwaves.

While this all sounds well and good, there is still one drawback; there would be no more reason for those who need the internet for work or other such reasons to go camping, or travel to other areas where broadband access may not be available as of right now.

Logitech delivers the Cordless Desktop Wave Pro

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Logitech announced its Cordless Desktop Wave Pro consisting of the Logitech Wave Keyboard and the Logitech MX 1100 cordless laser mouse. Both products boast of innovative features and sleek black design. The Wave Keyboard features a wave key frame, a U-shaped constant curve and cushioned and contoured palm rest. Logitech says that this keyboard offers a comfortable typing experience that was even validated by an independent study conducted by a fellow from the University of Washington.

The Wave Keyboard is complemented by the MX1000 mouse with its contoured, full-size shape that fits the user’s hand providing comfort and palm support. In addition this mouse is fully rechargeable even when in use, users can recharge it using a supplied USB cable. Logitech claims that this mouse can give one-day of power when charged for 15 minutes, and charging it for 7 hours gives out ample power enough to last up to six weeks of use. The mouse can also be bought separately. Its other features include two scrolling modes, hyper-fast scrolling, programmable buttons, and an adjustable dpi of up to 1,600.

The Cordless Desktop Wave Pro is slated for an October release in the US and mid-November in Europe and expected to retail for $129.99. Users can opt to buy the mouse separately beginning in late August in the US and mid-September in Europe for $79.99. This seem a bit pricey for such a device, but still a good buy for those who don’t mind spending that much for a PC accessory.

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Some of you might remember two weeks ago when we said that we would keep you posted on the Lenovo IdeaPad U8.

Well, it has been officially launched at the Olympics!  I guess there is no better place to launch Chinese technology than in Beijing right now, right?

Here are the golden specs.  It has a 6GB SSD, up to 2GB of RAM, plus a 800MHz Intel Atom Z500 processor.  Other exciting features include dual cameras, support for mobile television, as well as 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and EDGE connectivity.  As for the battery life, it has about 5 hours, and the entire unit weights 10 grams.

Unfortunately, this unit will only be available in China, and the company has said it will be at a price “equivalent” to smartphones.  As far as the release date, we have heard “sometime in September”.

Mobile microwave for your car

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

I had to think for a few minutes to imagine a reason to own this mobile microwave, even though I’ve often thought that a car refrigerator would be handy for cold drinks on the road. I suppose a microwave in the car could be useful if you’re someone who regularly takes long road trips and would rather heat up your own homemade lasagna than eat rest stop fare. Or if you’re a huge picnic fanatic who has to have food served really, really hot, which can’t be achieved with silly little thermoses. Or you want to make your own hot, organic popcorn for the movie theatre minutes before you go in.

You power it through your 12V cigarette lighter socket (produces 175W of power) or directly from your car battery (produces 660W). This little novelty appliance is now on sale at UK store Maplin for 80GBP, (about $149).

Children’s fiction on your iPhone

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Digital artist Aya Karpinska has published a digital children’s literature piece, entitled, “Shadows Never Sleep,” for the iphone and iTouch, available for free download from the iTunes App Store. (For the Apple device-impaired folks, you can watch Quicktime and html demos on her site.

There won’t be any spoilers here. I will say that the narrative uses sparse text and black and white images to create a slightly spooky quality in this work, described as “zoom fiction.” The genre’s name comes from its interface, which is an innovative utilization of the touch screen’s unique two finger “zoom” feature to explore the narrative. She collaborated with Nick Dalton, who did the programming, and Roxanne Carter was the model for the stark silhouettes.

It’s exciting to see artists starting to experiment with these new digital forms and move beyond the games and efficiency mobile applications that are popular and useful, but somewhat obvious.

New 120GB Zune clears FCC, no word on launch date

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Recently, a 120GB Microsoft Zune cleared the FCC, who first began testing the new Zune on June 19th. Unfortunately, for Zune fanatics, the new player by Microsoft doesn’t seem to be too different than the 80GB Zune, which it is speculated to replace.

It is an interesting ploy by making this hard drive 120GB, as their main competitor, Apple, has ipod’s with storage of 80GB and 160GB. In case you want a device with a lot of storage, and for minimal cost, you may want to consider the Zune now. In addition, no information has been announced regarding pricing or availability. However, since the 80GB Zune costs $249, it would make sense that the new 120GB Zune would sell for $299. As for launch date, it could be slated for a Fall launch.
