Monday, August 18th, 2008

One of Popgadget’s favorite accessories, Cliphanger, now has a very simple yet useful add-on, a little flashlight for those moments when you need just a little bit of light.

The original Cliphanger is a very lightweight clip shaped somewhat like a large paper clip that you attach to the back of your cell phone ($12.95 for one, but cheaper by the pack). You can then clip it onto a belt loop, purse strap, dashboard (or any surface using the included autohook that you attach to the surface). The Cliphanger Light version is $16.95 for a single purchase.

It now comes in 16 different colors, including the 6 lighter colors shown above. Cliphanger also makes 50 different kinds of shields with attached Cliphangers, including the one below for the iphone 3G (for $19.95). All can be purchased directly from the Cliphanger website. Some versions are also available at Amazon.

We’re (so) looking forward to the day when we Americans don’t have to look longingly at the amazing navigation units that pop up every month or so in South Korea, but until that fateful day arrives, we’ll continue drooling courtesy of the Easycar U7. This screen-dominated conglomerate features a 7-inch LCD, DMB TV tuner, 19-millimeter thick frame and an integrated multimedia player / text viewer. All that for just ₩199,000 ($191)? Nah, we’re not envious at all.

Lenovo ThinkPad X301 announced

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Lenovo has just announced the ThinkPad X301 notebook PC, touting it to be the thinnest and lightest full-function notebook in its class. As you can tell by the model number, the X301 will usher the venerable X300 out of the door, acting as the new king of the hill with its cutting-edge features and technologies in a thin and light form factor that measures one-inch thin. You will be able to store a whole lot of stuff on this baby without worrying about nasty shocks that might kill the hard drive, thanks to a choice between 64GB and 128GB solid state drives. So far, Lenovo’s own benchmarks have shown the X301 to perform 20% better on average compared to the X300 thanks to the inclusion of the latest DDR3 memory and Intel Core 2 Duo ultra low volt processor.

New support for DisplayPort makes viewing high definition content easy and ideal for models with the ultra-thin DVD burner. With support for both DisplayPort and VGA, users can even watch high definition content on multiple displays. Designed for maximum options for wireless connectivity, the ThinkPad X301 notebook offers models with high-speed mobile broadband and WiFi to connect wirelessly to the Internet, and also with Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband technology to connect wirelessly to other devices. Lenovo offers improved uplink performance by up to 250 percent for models with AT&T mobile broadband over previous ThinkPad notebooks with AT&T mobile broadband. Models supporting WiMAX will be available later this year. Additionally, GPS on notebook models with high speed mobile broadband allow travelers to more easily navigate to the office or airport. The notebook also includes Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies, unique hardware-software tools designed to maximize user productivity. With Lenovo’s improved Access Connections tool, users can navigate a user-friendly interface to easily find and access Internet and network connections. Also, Lenovo’s improved Power Manager gives users more control over notebook functions to enable longer battery life.

The new ThinkPad X301 will be available from August 26th onwards, with prices starting from a serious $2,599 and above, depending on the configuration.

The Rodeo Jacket with 39 hidden pockets

Monday, August 18th, 2008

If you’ve ever felt envious of those women with huge purses that are quite obviously weighed down by numerous items, you might like this jacket.  It actually has 39 hidden pockets, which could store just about anything your heart desired, including your numerous gadgets.  I’m sure this jacket would also be every shoplifter and pickpocket’s dream.  All of those hidden pockets are perfect for stashing stolen items.  Hopefully you would just like it for the extra pockets to store your own things though.

These Rodeo Jackets from the outside don’t really appear to be filled with pockets.  It actually just looks like your average jacket.  It suggests the pockets could be used for your ipod, cellphone, bottle of water, camera, sunglasses as well as anything else you can think of.  If you don’t like this particular jacket they do have other styles that feature hidden pockets, but some have less than others.  The Rodeo Jacket also features a way to run your earbuds through the inside of the jacket.  To pick one up it will cost you $100 from SeV.

iStik fastens your iPod nano on anything you’re wearing

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Clips on iPod cases work fairly well if you attach it just right to your clothing, and you’re not jumping around too much. But your iPod can go flying if you move too fast. And some clothing doesn’t work well for clipping an iPod to (for instance, the neckline of a sundress or the waistline of a bikini bottom would not look attractive weighed down in that way).

iStik cases fasten to your clothing through magnets. In addition to the case, there’s a magnetic backing that you place underneath your clothing to hold the case in place. According to the iStik website, the extreme magnetic attraction created by the eight Neodymium magnets in the iStik case ensures that it stays in place while you’re riding your bike, running, doing yoga, and other sports.

The iStik for 3rd generation ipod nano is priced at around $27 at Amazon. The nano 2nd generation case is $25 at Amazon.

Sony accidentally leaks out some new budget-friendly Walkman players

Monday, August 18th, 2008

So, what do we have here? Sony New Zealand has started showing some new models of Walkman players on their site. Word on the street say that these new Walkman players donning the model name NWZ-E430 are entry level Walkmans and appear to be a sequel to Sony’s A600 series. But this time, the NWZ-E430 will sport a 2-inch screen and probably up to 8GB of storage.

Perhaps taking a cue from other media players which make it easy for users to load music files onto their media players from their PCs, the NWZ-E430 fully supports drag-and-drop functionality as well as compatibility with a sync software. In addition, said Walkman would also come with an FM tuner, support various music formats to include AAC, MP3 and WMA. It will also be capable of playing MPEG-4 video. Battery time for this new Walkman doesn’t seem to be at par with other music players though, as it can only max out 45 hours of continuous music playing and 9.5 hours of video playback. That would be enough for 3 to 4 full movie watching experience though.

Since, this is all about unofficial leakage, pricing and release date are still unavailable. But we expect this to retail for no more than $200 though, considering that its “supposed” predecessor, the A600 is currently retailing at $100 in the U.S.

HP’s rugged EliteBook 2730p tablet and 2530p laptop for suits and Gobi squares

Monday, August 18th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 18th 2008 at 4:45AM
HP just unveiled a pair of rugged (MIL-STD 810F tested for dust, altitude, and high temperature) Centrino 2 12-inchers with the launch of its 2530p laptop and 2730p tablet. The 2730p bests the HP 2710p launched last year with the inclusion of a touchpad and new jog-dial along the side for use when the tablet is in slate mode. HP is also offering improved ULV (up to 1.2GHz) and LV (up to 1.86GHz) Core 2 Duo processor options and faster, 1.8-inch 5400RPM hard drive (up to 120GB), 80GB SSD, and Qualcomm’s Gobi dual EV-DO / HSPA wireless option for near-complete WWAN support globally. The 2730p continues to maintain the legacy LED-backlit display, “Night Light” keyboard lighting, optional webcam (with business card reader), slice battery (up to 10-hours), and expansion base / docking station. Importantly, the stylus no longer slips out of the silo when carrying the 2730p through the cubicle farm.

The 2530p offers pretty much the same in a thinner (0.99-inches vs. 1.11-inches thick), lighter (3.19-pounds vs. 3.74-pounds), more traditional laptop design. See it pictured after the break.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U8 makes official Olympics debut

Monday, August 18th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 18th 2008 at 5:08AM
Well, there it is, the Lenovo IdeaPad U8 launched official at the Beijing games just as we expected. With the launch come the final specs for this Asia-only MID we’ve seen incubating now for months: 4.8-inch touchscreen; the latest, sub-3 watt processor from Intel (uh hem, that’d be a Silverthorn-class Atom); 350-grams and 21 x 173 x 84-mm; up to 2GB memory and 6GB flash storage; dual-cameras; support for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) digital television via that protruding USB dongle; and 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, EDGE data and China-specific TD-SCDMA 3G, presumably. Expect to see it trotted out tomorrow as Intel’s San Francisco IDF gets underway — with any luck, it’ll be sporting WiMAX for a North American / European release.

Brando Telescope makes iPhone 3G photos 6x worse

Monday, August 18th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 18th 2008 at 6:35AM
We’ve seen these zoom lens add-ons before. Now Brando’s slapped together this 6x “Telescope” for the iphone 3G — a phone not exactly revered for its image quality. Just snap the unit to the back of the iPhone 3G and get to work. How good is it? About as bad as the $19 worth of optics within. Seriously, 19 bucks and available now.
