Samsung OMNIA (SGH-i900) Fisrt Look Review - Pocket-lint

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Pocket-lint does a first look review of the Samsung Omnia and writes, “Promising full touchscreen functionality with a business rather than consumer focus, the Omnia sports a 3.2-inch screen, comes with HSDPA 7.2Mbps and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera, accelerometer and will come with two memory options 8 or 16GB…It might feature a large touchscreen, but an iphone competitor this isn’t; nor is the i900 likely to stand up to any Android handset prototype we’ve seen to date down to the unimaginative user interface.”

Orange UK announces August 16 BlackBerry Bold launch date

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Orange in the UK has followed the recent announcements from T-Mobile in Germany and Movistar in Chili and has become the latest to announce an availability date for the blackberry Bold, customers will have to wait just a few more days, with the Bold expected to be in stores on August 16.

Although we are still awaiting the official release details from Orange, it is looking like the Bold will be free as long as customers sign the required 18-month agreement. Not only is the release of the Bold good news for UK customers, but it has also been rumored that the £45 per month calling plan will also include unlimited data.

Sony mylo Personal Communicator gets rebadged as the Sony mylo Internet Device

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Sony has recently begun selling the mylo under a slightly different name, the COM-2 will no longer be know as a “personal communicator,” but instead will be the Sony mylo Internet Device.

The new name makes sense, as it seems to better represent what the mylo actually is. The original COM-1 focused more on instant messaging, however thanks to the improved web browsing experience and direct YouTube uploads the COM-2 offers more of a complete Internet experience.

Keeping in mind that even though the new “Internet Device” name does make more sense, I cannot help to think that “personal communicator” always sounded a little funny, even if the device was intended for those “who use instant messaging as a primary form of communication and networking for their social life.”

While the new name may help to spur some sales, the biggest barrier seems to be the price tag, at $300 its a little expensive, especially considering lots of people can get these same features from low-cost notebooks and even plenty of mobile phones nowadays.

Slacker G2 Wi-Fi Portable player hits the FCC for approval

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Looking almost like a rejected PDA design from the 90’s, the latest incarnation of the Slacker Portable Player has just made its FCC appearance. Overall Slacker G2 Wi-Fi portable player seems to be a big improvement style-wise. Based on the images, the player is roughly 3-inches tall and 2-inches wide, which will be nice compared to the current player which is 4.2-inches tall and 2.76 inches wide. The overall layout has also changed, the display will obviously be smaller as well, but all things considered a 4-inch diagonal display on a device that does not play video seems to be overkill anyway. In addition to the smaller overall size and smaller display, the buttons have also been moved to a more convenient position on the front and a located just under the display.

Other items to note is that according to the FCC images, it will be available in at least a 4GB option, and will feature an FM receiver, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g. The Slacker G2 portable player will be powered by a Broadcom BCM4325GKFBG chip and a 730mAH battery. Typical with the FCC leaks, we still have no time line for release or any pricing information.

Brando’s Anchor Clock with working gears

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

This cute little clock would not only show your love for the sea, but your love for seeing the insides of machinery.  It features a design that keeps the gears out in the open for all to see.  It has ten to be specific and when the clock is on the gears will slowly move, instead of just sitting there and looking pretty.  Although I don’t think the chains dangling down move with the anchors.

The clock is actually from the infamous Brando, but frankly, for once I think Brando found a cool product that isn’t that cheesy.  Brando does have the tendency to sell very silly and random USB-powered gadgets.  This one isn’t even USB-powered, it’s battery powered instead.  Maybe Brando is branching out and will be selling more products like this.  It sadly is a little pricey, it’s being sold for $115.  Which isn’t horrible when you consider all of the working gears, it just depends on how much you’re willing to pay for a clock.

GROM USB Car Interface

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The GROM USB Car Interface from GROM Audio is an accessory that aims to simplify the playback of media files on an original car stereo.

GROM USB Car Adapter enables you to bring your favorite media collection in a car, easily access it, shuffle songs, skip between tracks, and adjust volume — all of this only with OEM car stereo head unit or multifunction steering wheel controls. An exclusive technology and best-in-class audio decoder brings up a new level of listening experience - clear sound not poisoned by long wires and media player line out drivers. Extended control capabilities allow managing thousands of songs limited only by USB device capacity. Just connect your USB memory stick to your car stereo system through GROM USB Car Interface and enjoy the ride!

Unfortunately at this point in time, the GROM USB MP3 Car Interface only supports Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen car stereos so those with other makes will just have to wait. There are plans to increase its compatibility to work with Acura, Chrysler, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes, Škoda, and Toyota as from September 2008.

Colorful iPhone 3G silicone cases in packs of 10

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

If no one has ever accused your closet of being monochromatic, dark, or too dull, then this Mega Combo Pack of 10 silicone cases designed for the subtle curves of the iphone 3G would probably fit right into your wardrobe. The $70 pack includes “100% pure silicone” textured skins in yellow, golden yellow, blue, orange, pink, green, white, black, gray, and dark gray

I’ve never heard of most of the colors before (they must be new), but my hangers say they know the last three all too well. Mommie Dearest, be damned. I’m switching to wire hangers this instant. I hear they’re not as judgmental.
