Extra-Wide Contacts gives you that sought after Anime look

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Rather you call it Japanimation or anime, the Japanese style of cartooning has a few distinctive factors which are hard to ignore. The chunky hair styles are angular and sharp, while the stand-out facial feature is undeniably the huge eyes and wide irises. While you can easily fashion your hair in anyway you wish with enough effort, changing your eyes to resemble an anime character was at one time, pretty impossible.

It seems that a few companies are now starting to produce Extra-Wide Contact Lenses which give you that deer-caught-in-the-headlights wide irised look. Ranging from prices between $30-$50 a pair, depending on the company you purchase from. Cosplay was never this realistic.

If your worried about your contacts having the proper prescription, don’t fret. These contacts aren’t limited to cosmetic purposes. Just send the companies your proper prescription and the lenses are made to order, so you’ll still see the world clearly.

There are a few companies which are offering these Extra-Wide Contacts, both Geo and Dueba will ship the pair right out to you when ordered from Shopping Times. So if you’ve been looking for the right costume for the next anime convention, you might be in luck.

Spy Kite is Toy for James Bond Jr.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched a show on the USA Network called Burn Notice, but it is about a spy that was fired by his particular spy organization. He is now forced to do A-Team-ish jobs for clients in order to make a living.

I bring this show up because the main character, Michael, makes his own spy equipment from old cellular phones and GPS devices, and the Spy Kite is low-tech spy gear that he could just buy instead of making.

The Spy Kite is just what it sounds like, a wind flyer that has a digital camera mounted on the frame. This delta wing model is made of fiberglass, and can take pictures from 80 feet in the air. I believe that the 80 foot height requirement is because the string holder has a wireless remote that allows a picture to be taken.

Once you are finished with your spywork, you can reel in your kite and attach it to your PC and download your photos. I have no word on the resolution or memory of this camera, but I have my doubts on whether this would work. After all, every time that I fly a kite, it moves around too erratically, which is not ideal for shooting photos.

Well, if you’re willing to take a chance, perhaps you should try it out for about £29.99 or $57. You can purchase it at the Gadgetshop site.

Last weeks coolest gadget and $50 winner are…

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Gaj-It returns to winning ways, winning last weeks coolest gadget with the exceedingly cool Rovio Wi-Fi Robot.

This ingenious piece of gadgetry streams video and audio through a built-in camera, and can be controlled from anywhere. When I say anywhere, I do mean that you can be sipping mojitos in Hawaii and checking up on what’s going at home in London by controlling Rovio around your living room via the internet.

In second place comes Decide What to Buy with the useful telephoto lens for your mobile.

This universal lens also connects up to a tripod and transforms your phone’s humble camera into a 8x zoom machine. Now all you need to do is fit the thing in your bag.

Finally in third place we have the not so useful but pretty cool R/C Dead Fred Zombie.

Halloween comes a little bit early with the remote-controlled Dead Fred. This 4-foot long realistic looking zombie is powered by a quartet of DC motors and two 12-volt batteries, allowing it to groan, scream and talk in full digital audio thanks to an onboard amplifier and speaker (complete with trailing entrails).

Thanks to everybody who voted, commented and submitted entries (If you write for a gadget themed blog and wish to be included in next weeks contest check out the CGOTW instructions page).

Now onto the randomly drawn winner for the $50 Amazon voucher, it goes to commentator AMiR, congratulations we’ll be in touch.

We have a new totally different contest starting tomorrow, want to hear about it first? Subscribe to our daily digest via email or RSS.

PBTeen’s Stackable Speakers save on workspace

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

If you’re trying to be careful about how to best utilize your desk space, a set of speakers like these would be convenient.  They stack straight up and down, so only a small square on your desk is being used.  Granted you could probably just buy a set of mostly square speakers and attempt to stack them in the same fashion.  However, these look like they lock together nicely to keep them sturdy.  Plus when you feel the need you can lay them out next to each other instead of stacking.

These come from PBTeen and this isn’t the first time I’ve come across one of their teen products that would look great for adults as well.  Especially those in their 20’s that are either in a small dorm or living in a small apartment, since a lot of their products are focused on space saving.  The speakers come in several different colors; pink, light blue, light green, dark blue and gray.  They measure 3” and will work for either your ipod or iphone.  The Stackable Speakers will cost you $129.

Camera drones without mirrors or lenses to monitor future battlefields, you

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 12th 2008 at 7:31AM
As the military industrial complex surges forward, so do advances in technology for the public sector. At least that’s how the cold-war wisdom goes. Case in point: QinetiQ is developing a lens-less, mirror-less, battlefield imaging system with some help from your DARPA’s deep pockets. The LACOSTE project (Large Area Coverage Optical Search while Track and Engage) aims to set aloft high-altitude (about 20km) drones and air-ships fitted with a special, thousand-strong microscopic sensor array (a “first of their kind,” according to QinetiQ), a “mask,” and image processor to decode the scene and extract an image of the quickly changing conditions on the battlefield or, you guessed it, city streets. The resulting lightweight and highly-durable system should feature a “super resolution” mode with the ability to “detect and simultaneously track large numbers of moving vehicles in dense urban areas with a high degree of accuracy, 24-hours a day.” And here you thought CCTV was intrusive.
