Daan air purifier kills the unbearable stench of rotting fish in style

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

by Joshua Topolsky, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 12:56PM
Finally, purifying the air in your home doesn’t have to make your pad look like it was ripped from the pages of the SkyMall catalog. If you put a value on looks (and you do, don’t you?) you’ll be pleased to know that a Korean designer has created the Daan — a new purifier that gets the job done while actually looking somewhat stylish. The devices suck up dust and cat hair in a 161 sq. ft. space, but are modular in nature, allowing you to stack multiple units on a stand for cleaning larger spaces (they can also be separated and moved to smaller rooms). Home electronics-maker Coway will apparently manufacture the device, but we don’t have a word on street date or price. Sure, they may still be killing you slowly, but at least they’ll look good while doing it.

[Thanks, Tony]

Motorola expands ROKR portfolio

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Motorola might be bruised and battered from many directions, but that doesn’t mean they’re throwing in the towel. They proved their resilience by adding yet more handsets to the ROKR line (three in total), and the new music-centric handsets are the MOTOROKR EM30, the ROKR EM28, and the ROKR EM25, which comes in candybar, clamshell and slider form factors respectively. Do take a look at each individual handset right after the jump.

ROKR EM30
One moment ROKR EM30 is a mobile phone; the next, it transforms into your favorite music player. It uses Motorola’s innovative ModeShift technology to illuminate the keyboard - red keys illuminate in music mode and a brilliant blue keypad appears in phone mode - taking users from talk to text to complete music immersion with a touch of a button. With colorful cues that let users know exactly which mode they are in, the ROKR EM30 connects the sounds that matter most: family, friends and favorite artists.

In addition to the basics in talking and texting, ROKR EM30 is loaded with other great features for music lovers too, including high-fidelity audio and seconds-fast MP3 downloads for listening to their favorite tunes. Consumers will know the artist and song playing on the FM radio with Radio Data System (RDS) technology. The 3.5mm stereo headset jack provides consumers the flexibility to use the headset of their choice with ROKR EM30. Compatibility with Windows Media Player 11 provides the freedom to download music from more than 200 online music stores worldwide.

ROKR EM28
ROKR EM28 offers easy access to a genuine music-player experience in a familiar clamshell design and allows users to control their music using touch-sensitive keys that appear only when they’re needed. The front of the phone shows the name of the artist and song without even opening the flip. ROKR EM28 has sonic features that enhance the music’s performance. A 3D sound effect gives music a surround-sound quality and an audio equalizer provides 11 pre-set music genres, including rock, reggae and pop for optimal listening. Consumers also can boost the bass up to nine decibels.

ROKR EM25
ROKR EM25 offers a genuine music player experience including immediate access to a stored music library and built-in FM radio, in a sleek, quality handset. The phone has a dedicated music key so consumers can simply access stored music and familiar music controls to play, pause, forward and rewind songs. Consumers can use FMShare to share a favorite station with friends by sending it in a text message and SONGID technology to identify a song while out and about.

The ROKR EM30 will be the first of the three to be launched in Taiwan, followed by other markets throughout the quarter. As for the ROKR EM28 and ROKR EM25, both of them will roll out later this quarter.

The Pipila UV Pacifier Cleaner because kids are gross

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

You know it’s true, how many times did Jr. drop that pacifier and pop it right back into his mouth before you can catch him?  By nature, kids are just gross.  It’s best that we don’t know exactly where that pacifier has been, especially when they attempt to shove it into your mouth.  Well for those moments of horror when you actually find out where it has been, Pipila will be there to save the day.  It takes UV rays and will kill 99.9% of the germs on the pacifier.

It’s also nice because it is about the size of a grapefruit, so it will fit into the diaper bag along with everything else in the world.  It will take a full six minutes to do its job, which will seem like an eternity if you have a screaming child on your hands.  This gadget will likely appeal to mostly first time parents, who haven’t yet realized that no matter how hard you try kids are still gross.  This probably would also be more realistic for just doing on occasion instead of after every single time the pacifier hits the floor.  You can pick one up for $40 through their site.

HP 2230s lightweight notebook looks pretty good

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

We recently covered the HP 550 showing up on HP’s product page, and we’ve also caught wind of Hewlett-Packard’s latest foray into the lightweight laptop market with the 2230s.

Since this is new technology, our information is always pretty sketchy at best.  We do know that Intel’s GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset is on board, as well as Centrino 2 processors.  It also has 3GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11n, three USB ports along with an HDMI port.

There is also an optical drive for DVD+/-RW, along with Windows Vista Operating system.  It also uses HP 3D DriveGuard that can detect sudden movement and initiate protective action, helping to protect the hard drive against bumps and drops, as well as any critical data.

The 2230s has a 12.1-inch screen, and weighs only 4.07 pounds.  You should be able to pick up the 2230s for about $1,000.

BlackBerry Kickstart is actually the BlackBerry Pearl 8220?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Well it looks like that Kickstart, you know RIM’s first venture into the clamshell market will not be coming after all. It seems that there is no Kickstart, at least by name that is, the handset is still the real deal, but according to these latest leaked promo images, we have been calling it by an incorrect name.

It turns out that the Kickstart will actually be the BlackBerry Pearl 8220. Strange, although it does make you wonder if the current candybar style of the Pearl will be going away. Personally I think RIM would have had a better intro with a new name, after all it is the first BlackBerry of its flippin kind. On another note, its always interesting to see the internal sales documents, because after all how else would we learn that the primary customers for the Kickstart Pearl 8220 would be “young urbanites,” “multi-tasking women,” and “mobile men,” good stuff.

Lets just hope the early information about the fabled $49.99 price tag holds a little more accurate than the name information.

BlackBerry Bold now available in Germany, still not in US, Canada

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The blackberry Bold seems to have begun its worldwide roll out, and both the US and Canada are left waiting, as neither even have even had an official availability date announced.

The latest to shift the Bold from the coming soon to available status is T-Mobile Germany, who joins Movistar in Chile. The one thing that is certain it the pricing seems to be widely varied, we saw Movistar launch the Bold for an expensive 299,990 Chilean pesos (around $588 US) while T-Mobile seems to have taken the low approach, with a price tag of just 129.95 euros (around $200 US).

Lets just hope that when the Bold finally lands here in the US and Canada we see similar pricing to Germany.

Eee PC officially goes mainstream, now available at Target

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Asus and Target have just announced that the Eee PC will now be available both online and also at 150 of their retail locations. I suppose this news should come as little surprise, because Asus seems to be spreading the Eee brand so thin with new models, that it now being available at Target almost seems normal.

I think what will end up being more surprising is just how many customers will see this as a good idea. As a geek, I love my Eee PC, and I have shown it to many non-geeks who loved it, but majority of them also stated that without having used mine, they would never have purchased one.

Anyway, hopefully Target and Asus will have better luck, they currently have a pretty full range of products available including the 2G Surf in a variety of colors, the 4G Surf in black or white, and accessories to include extra batteries, headphones, power adapters and mice. The 2G Surf is retailing for $299.99 and the 4G Surf is retailing for $349.99.

MSI intro’s the charity-supporting Wind netbook Love Edition

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

MSI has recently unveiled a new special edition for its Wind netbook, the Love Edition and it will support the Global Charity Program. The new special edition Wind will be available in pure white with tans, bright silver and shining gold hearts on the casing. It will otherwise keep the same specs as the standard edition Wind.

With the introduction of this netbook, MSI is also launching the “Love with the Wind” global charity program which will help “poor children” in countries such as Taiwan, China, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and India learn to use computers.

According to MSI, their goal is to “make a concrete contribution to bridge the digital divide and encourage others to show their care as well.”

If nothing else I have to give MSI some credit, typically a love edition brings to mind a device that is either available in red or pink and launched sometime leading up to Valentines Day, neither of which happened. The MSI Wind Love Edition actually looks nice with some subtle graphics on the case, but nothing over the top and gaudy, well done MSI. Plus you cannot fault them for giving to charity.
