Samsung Costume hard drive concept appeals to the ladies

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 27th 2008 at 5:41AM
Not that Samsung is actually looking to pump this out into beauty salons worldwide, but there stands at least a mild chance that sophisticated females shopping for new compacts would also spring for some storage. Joongoo Lee’s Costume is a sleek, deliberately styled 2.5-inch external hard drive that looks entirely at home mixed in with various makeup components. Additionally, the bundled dock is equally sexy, though we can only hope there’s a USB 2.0 port somewhere on this thing. Though this is just a concept, we wouldn’t put it past Samsung to turn into a reality — after all, it did just produce pink and blue BlackJack IIs. Your soft side is showing, Sammy.

Nikon D700 full-frame DSLR gets unboxed on video

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

It’s easy enough to drool over the press shots of Nikon’s luscious D700. Seeing someone unbox this full-frame beast on video is another experience entirely (bordering on spiritual, really). Unfortunately, the vid waiting after the break is just two minutes long and doesn’t show any clicks being depressed, but those looking to get a better idea of the size and build have plenty of reason to click through.

[Thanks, Jon]

A nice additional feature will soon be made available for Treo 800w owners, the ability to voice dial over your Bluetooth connection. Sadly this feature just did not make the cut before the official announcement, this update will allow users to speak commands over their headset and also hear reminders and feedback from the running programs.

A specific date has not yet been announced, however based on a recently posted page on the Palm website, it will be in the “coming days.”

Yahoo! to compensate DRM-protected Music Store customers

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 26th 2008 at 4:58PMHey, both of you Yahoo! Music Store customers, listen up. Just hours after Yahoo! affirmed that it would be powering down its DRM servers, along comes a spokesperson to alleviate any worries that you two will get screwed in all of this. According to Carrie Davis, customers “will be compensated for whatever they paid for the music,” and she continued on to state that Yahoo “had not yet decided what exactly it would do, but it would take care of its customers.” Some of the possible options include getting cash back for the money spent on tracks or receiving MP3 versions of the jams sans DRM (we’d take the former, thanks). Depressingly, there doesn’t seem to be a definitive time table laid out just yet for the restitution process.

Lego Sports City recreates Beijing Olympics

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Beijing Olympic Games are rapidly approaching. One day in the near future the Olympic Torch will be lit, and some of the finest athletes in the world will compete for their countries. Sadly, there’s no Olympic category for “speed computer assembly” or “fastest software coding”. Us geeks are typically left in the dark when it comes to athletic prowess, other than that one year we were on the track team in high school.

But never underestimate the mind of a geek. Just because we don’t have the proper coordination or balance for athletic competition doesn’t mean our involvement in the Olympics is ruled out. I mean, for one, you’ve got to imagine the judges are major nerds. If you need more proof about geek involvement, just check out this amazing Lego structure called Sports City, a total recreation of some of the venues which we’ll see in Beijing.

HKLUG erected this awesome Lego sculpture which is both impressively realistic and pretty massive in size. The replica of the National Stadium itself took over 100 hours to complete, measuring about 40″ x 48″. Also included in the sculpture is the National Aquatics Center (”Swimming Cube”), and Olympic Village.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Hong Kong within the next month or so, you can check out the Lego Sports City yourself at Grand Century Place between now and August 31, 2008. Check out the HKLUG website for much more information about this massive Lego project.
