JATY DR7200 GPS has way too many features

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

If you like to read Dilbert comic, you might remember a particular strip where Dilbert and his co-workers encounter The Feature Creep.  The Feature Creep is a symbol of the person who haunts every electronic device manufacturer’s research and development area, and the creep is never satisfied until the most unnecessary features are added on to the next product.

The Feature Creep must have went crazy on the JATY DR7200, a GPS device that has a SiRFstar III GPS chipset, 533MHZ CPU, plus mountain, car, and golf GPS navigation capability.  It also has a whole slew of features that probably shouldn’t be on a GPS.

For example, it has an eBook Reader, in case you want to do some reading on the road.  If you are not an avid road-reader, you might enjoy watching some Digital TV with video playback.  Both of those are illegal behind the wheel, by the way.

However, the DR7200 does have some features which are useful.  For example, the mp3 player can be used legally on the road as long as you’re not doing too much manipulating of the controls on the road.  The phone charger ought to come in handy as well.

It also has a handy life-saving tool of a breathalyzer.  I would hope that this never becomes a standard GPS feature, but if it can reduce drunk driving fatalities, I’m all for it.

The JATY DR7200 is only available in Korea for a price of around $300.

Ainol intro’s the 4.3-inch V3000 portable media player

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Ainol has just unveiled some details on their latest portable media player, the V3000 which features a large 4.3-inch display. While a display size like that is not going to be enough to win everyone over, we also have to add that the display offers an impressive 800 x 480 resolution.

Aside from the display, the V3000 is expected to feature dual-headphone jacks, a TV-out, and will offer high-resolution playback in AVI, RM/RMVB and FLV video formats. In addition to the video playback it will also have support for MP3, WMA, FLAC and APE audio files.

Other features that have been hinted at, but remain unconfirmed are GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

The V3000 will be available in a 4GB and 8GB model and are expected to retail for $70-90 and $90-$110 respectively. Of course, this PMP is headed for the Chinese market only, leaving the rest of us to simply drool.

GO GO Gadget Shirt!

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Inspector Gadget is our hero. Take a second to revel in his memory. How cool was this fictional man? He had a gadget for every situation, all of which were voice activated and ready for duty at a moments notice. In a way, Inspector Gadget is the prototypical dream geek. He is a true gadget idol and a man among mere mortals.

A cartoon character is a sad person to look up to though. There is just no way to compete with someone as utterly cool as an animated geek. We can say “go-go-gadget!” as much as we want, and the truth is that nothing will happen, unless we’ve programmed one of our gadgets to answer to our commands. At least this Go Go Gadget Shirt tee allows us to hold a piece of the Inspector mythology close to our hearts.

Available in both black and heather grey colored background with white lettering, the Go Go Gadget Shirt woman’s v-neck tee is made with 100% preshrunk cotton. This addition to your wardrobe will surely get all of you geeky ladies all geared up for fighting crime with your gadgetry-assisted skills.

The Go Go Gadget Shirt! t-shirt is available from Cafe Press for $21.99. While we’re pretty confident that the shirt won’t instill us with gadget powers, such as the old “helicopter from your hat” trick, but hey, what’s a geek to do? By the way, we need a man’s version of this shirt!

Tokyo Station Gets a Taste of 65-inch Digital Posters

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Static advertisements and paper posters have just become things of the past with LCD advertisement displays on the horizon. Last July 14, Tokyo Station gets a taste of these digital posters courtesy of East Japan Railway Company and East Japan Marketing & Communications Inc. Ten 65-inch digital posters were placed at the station and will remain there until testing ends on September 30, 2008. The vertically-oriented posters are originally 150cm in diameter and 15 cm thick, although the columns add another 30cm of thickness to them.

These digital posters display still images which change every minute at a 1920 x 1080 resolution. This specific test will evaluate people’s response to audio-less still image digital posters using lcd panels. In case the testing gets a positive response from the Japanese public, there’s a chance that the operations of these large LCD displays will extend until after September. The posters’ contents are delivered wirelessly using HSDPA to a PC connected to one of the five columns (two displays placed back-to-back), and then relayed to the other four through set top boxes using wireless LAN.

The Russian steampunk mouse

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Steampunk is one of those trends that makes me extremely sorry that I haven’t the slightest bit of crafting skills to make my own steampunk gadgets.  Purely because steampunk is usually very expensive, so unless you can make your own most of us will never get our hands on any of our own.  This one was created by a Russian modder who posted his project in a forum for us all to drool over.  He’s nice like that.  He even crafted a box to display it in.  He doesn’t give a single bit of fun details on how long it took or what he used.

Granted the little that Babel Fish attempted to translate didn’t exactly translate that well.  I can mostly tell what he was getting at.  One nice thing is he does give a before picture of the original mouse that he built around.  He even had his cat pose with the mouse for a quick snapshot.  I always manage to find one little detail that bothers me to no end on steampunk mods though.  For example this one, I dislike the way he covered up the original mouse cord.  Yes, I’m aware I’m entirely too picky.

Dancing Fingers Makes Touchscreen a Whole Lot Easier

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Just to let you know, this Dancing Fingers product has nothing to do with a fun finger Dance Dance Revolution game that was reported on two years ago.

The Dancing Fingers is designed for those people who have fat fingers. This has nothing to do with a person’s weight, but just the uneven distribution of fat cells on the digits. Some of those operations on the iphone, like the QWERTY keyboard, are quite small and it is difficult for someone with enlarged fingertips to make precise touches.

These Dancing Fingers are designed to fit snugly on the index and middle fingers, so now “fat-fingered” people can have some full touchscreen capability. No more of hitting the wrong letter anymore.

So far, the Dancing Fingers is just a concept device by China native Alfred Chu. I’m not certain why the Dancing Fingers have lights on them. Maybe that is for some sort of better interface, but I don’t see why longer and pointier fingernails couldn’t do the same thing as this product. I’m guessing that one girl from X2 with the long claws won’t need this product.

Actually, I have read on another site (my Source’s source) that the Dancing Fingers are supposed to turn your fingers into a computer’s mouse. Unfortunately, I don’t have any word on how that works.

Microsoft gets colorful with new controllers

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The Xbox 360 controllers are pretty bland to date, despite functioning perfectly fine, they aren’t the nicest things to look at in your living room as black and white colors rarely capture the eye’s attention at first glance. Good thing Microsoft has decided to introduce a little bit of color into Xbox 360 owners’ lives thanks to a bright red and equally flashy green controller hitting the market on September 30. The former will come bundled with a play and charge kit, while the latter is a standalone device, retailing for $65 and $55, respectively.

Gigabyte M528 is really tiny

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Just in case you thought that the Asus Eee PC was one impressive tiny wonder, along comes Gigabyte and their diminutive M528 netbook. Measuring just 152mm x 80mm x 23mm, this small device manages to pack in full PC functionality in such a small form factor. It will be powered by the impressive Intel Atom 800MHz processor and aided by 512MB RAM, and despite the fact that it runs on Linux, it is also able to drop that and get Windows XP up and running without any problems. Power consumption works out to approximately 2.8W on average, which is always a good thing.

Leaked image of the upcoming Fujitsu Siemens Amilo netbook

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The above picture features both the existing 17-inch Amilo notebook, which is along side Fujitsu’s upcoming entry into the netbook market. The 8.9-inch netbook is rumored to be coming this autumn and is expected to retail for €400, which is currently around $640 US.

Specs are still unknown, but based on the keyboard it looks like it will be running, or at least have the option for Windows Vista. One thing that we can tell for sure is that if Fujitsu is truly looking to compete in this market, they are going to need to pack something really special inside to justify that price, especially with the Dell E rumored to be coming in at $299.

Water Jet Propelled Road Rocket

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Summer time is here yet again, so what better way than to entertain yourself outdoors with the Water Jet Propelled Road Rocket?

This is the water jet fueled outdoor racer that reaches speeds up to 272 scale MPH as it sprays a stream of water in its wake. Simply fill the water tank with 34-40 oz. of water and pump in air to create thrust up to 60 psi (about 50 pumps). A step on the foot release pedal launches the vehicle amid a soaking jet spray. Modeled after the road rockets that once sped across Utahs famed Bonneville Salt Flats, the racers missile-shaped fuselage is vacuum formed PVC and has dual airfoils that enable it to travel up to 150′ on a paved, level outdoor surface. Includes an air pump with an integrated pressure gauge and two sheets of decals for customizing your racer. For ages 7 and up.

You will be able to pick up this fun garden toy for $42.95 a pop. At least it looks fun enough to tear the kids away from their Xbox 360s, Wiis and PS3s.
