PSP firmware 4.05 goes live with new visualizers

Monday, July 14th, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 6:56PM
Sony’s official blog says PSP firmware 4.05, out now, contains “other features” in addition to a couple new music visualizers, but it’s not clear what they are, apart from a slightly tweaked XMB animation if you’ve got a wallpaper set up. Go forth and download — let us know if there’s anything earth-shattering in there, won’t you?

by Paul Miller, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 9:14AM
Face it, the whole point of buying a touchscreen anything is, um, touching the thing, so it’s usually nice to get a bit of touching in before the sale, just to make certain sure it’s throwing off the right touching vibes. Touching. Well, HP’s TouchSmart 2, which started shipping late last month from HP’s online store, is now ready to get smudged up at a retail store near you, and will be available in $1,299 (IQ504) and $1,499 (IQ506) editions, the latter of which sports a TV-tuner.

Palm makes Treo 800w official

Monday, July 14th, 2008

At long last, Palm announces their “most business-friendly” phone yet.  The 800w is destined for Sprint and packs Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1.  It is packed with goodies, like EV-DO rev A, WiFi and GPS.  Hoohah!

Palm and Sprint suggest it surfs the web and downloads emails at broadband speeds.  It features an innovative one button on WiFi and a 320×320 display.  While not on the thin side at 0.73” (iphone 3G is 0.48” for reference), the phone does look nice, better than Palm phones have in years, IMO.

Battery life checks in at 4.5 hours talk and 200 standby.  2.0 mp camera also does video, bluetooth and up to 8GB microSD cards are supported.  A fine business phone.

It does look like Palm spent some time making tweaks in the GUI to make it easy.  Things like accessing Navigation from the Today screen as well as dialing from the Today screen shows they are learning.

Available today at $249.99 after rebates, discounts, voodoo and you may or may not have to sacrifice a chicken.

Socket Sense Power Strip

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Power strips haven’t exactly aged very well. Power adapters started getting huge and oddly shaped, which meant many outlets in a power strip would wind up being wasted. There have been ways to get around that thanks to the aid of some cool gadgets, but none which seem quite as effective as the Socket Sense.

Beautifully designed and well-thought out, the Socket Sense power strip ensures that every bulky AC adapter and plug has a spot to fit. Each of the sockets are positioned at a 45-degree angle, as to make sure that even the bulkiest adaptors stick to their own spot, not covering any of the other outlets.

The Socket Sense also includes an expanding length so that you can house as much bulk as needed without each plug interfering with one another. The lateral movement over an extending base, in addition to the angled outlets work together to provide one awesome power strip gadget.

The Socket Sense can be yours for $30. There’s no need to keep swapping plugs whenever you need to use a different gadget. The Socket Sense will make sure all of your gadgets are running full speed ahead, even if they have bulky boxed frames.

ASUS points finger at Intel over lack of Eee PC 901s in the UK

Monday, July 14th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 12:11PMAs if we needed any further developments to muddy the Eee PC waters, it seems that there’s a curious lack of Linux-based Eee PC 901s available at stores in the UK at the moment, and ASUS is apparently laying the blame squarely at Intel, not Microsoft. As Register Hardware points out, that word comes after some speculation that Microsoft may have pressured ASUS to push the Windows XP-based Eee PCs more heavily, but an ASUS spokesperson insists that the company produces Linux and XP-based systems in equal amounts. The spokesperson adds, however, that Intel hasn’t been able to supply enough Atom processors to allow ASUS to keep up its pace, which seems to suggest that the Linux-based 901s are harder to find simply because they’re sold out. It looks like folks in the UK won’t have to wait too much longer to get their Linux-fueled netbook fix, however, with some unspecified suppliers now pointing to increased availability in late July.

The Solar Powered Heated Shower won’t cool you off

Monday, July 14th, 2008

After spending all day in the pool with all that chlorine, a quick rinse before laying out in the sun would be nice. Especially if it meant you didn’t have to walk through the house and get everything between you and the shower soaked. The best thing about this solar powered shower is that it is heated. So you won’t have to freeze, as if you aren’t cold enough by getting out of the water. Sadly boys, I’m afraid that although as usual it features a cute girl posing underneath the downpour of water, she is not included in the price tag.

However, if you pick one up at least your house won’t smell like chlorine. Not only that but if you’ve been out in the yard barefoot, instead of rinsing off with the hose itself, you can rinse your feet with warm water. Since it is solar powered it would be easy to just pick it up and toss it in the shed for those cooler months. The shower can be placed anywhere that your hose can possibly reach. Each one is being sold for $199 and pours out water at up to 86 degrees (Farenheit).
