CradlePoint CTR500 travel router gets reviewed

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 14th 2008 at 12:24PM
Yeah, travel routers are still a rare breed, but when the entire family (or team, for you suits) needs to hop online in the hotel which conveniently provides absolutely no WiFi, it’s a real gem to have around. CradlePoint’s recently introduced 3G-ready CTR500 was taken for a test drive over at PC Perspective, and all in all, the unit performed as advertised. For those unfamiliar, it simply enables USB or ExpressCard-based WWAN modems to be connected, and from there, a variety of computers can retrieve WiFi from it. Better still, the unit did equally well when acting as a traditional WLAN router. The only real dig was the $179.99 price tag, which seemed a bit steep for the majority of folks who “probably would not need the functionality it offers.” Give the full writeup a look in the read link below.

Sumitomo debuts superconductor powered electric car

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Okay, the science nerds in the audience didn’t exactly let us know that we’ve entered the age of commercial superconductors, but apparently Sumitomo Electric has built a Toyota Crown Comfort that’s powered by a superconducting engine. Cooled by liquid nitrogen to -200° C, apparently all this madness nets you an extra 10% gain in distance over regular battery-powered motors. In other words: totally, completely worth the near comical impracticality.

Green Plug starts small, signs on Westinghouse

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 14th 2008 at 11:46AM
Remember Green Plug? That universal connector we detailed last month which aims to replace wall warts and help Mother Earth out in the process? Turns out, said outfit has just landed its first real believer as Westinghouse committed to using the smart power technology. Even Darwin Chang, Westy’s CTO, admitted that his firm “wasn’t the largest, but somebody has to be the first.” Chang is hoping that utilizing said tech will help it cut costs by eliminating the need to ship power adapters with its wares, but we’d say that’s being pretty optimistic. Really, the only way that will go over well is if hordes of other firms jump on the (currently desolate) bandwagon in short order — any takers?

Opera 9.5 now available for your USB drive

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

We saw the official release of Opera 9.5 earlier in the week, and now Opera fans can rejoice as it has also been ported over to run on your USB drive. Dubbed Opera 9.5 USB it offers all the wonderful features that you will find on the regular desktop version, and only takes up 15MB of space on your flash drive. The USB version will also not leave any data on the computer you choose to use it with, meaning no history will be left behind showing off the odd things you may have searched for.

The only drawback that I can see, is that this USB version will run on Windows only, otherwise it should be nice to take a good browser and not get stuck using IE or without your favorite bookmarks when away from your main computer.

Newsmy F4 could be the first MP6 player

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

If the portable media player manufacturer Newsmy rings a bell to you, then you’d be glad to know that it has just released a new model called the F4 (now this one certainly rings a bell to me, sounds like a popular Taiwanese pop group). Anyway, our F4 MP6 player seems to be having an identity crisis based on what we have gathered about it. Some say it is an MP6 player that can play RM/ RMVB directly, but it could also be an MP5 player and definitely not an MP4 player since it has a camera. Anyway only Newsmy can confirm whether the F4 is also an MP5 player. However, upon checking their site, there was no available information about the F4 player just yet.

Well anyway, the F4 also boasts of a 1.3-megapixel camera and supports most digital movie file formats. Aside from playing movies, it can record as well and even supports direct uploading of these recorded video to YouTube.

That’s practically everything that we could write about this media player so far. Hopefully, we get enlightened by the manufacturer once they realized that we need more information about their product> No word yet on whether this will be an international release, but its safe to say it will not be heading to the US.

Apple TV gets the SSD treatment

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

by Ryan Block, posted Jun 14th 2008 at 6:34AMWell, it had to happen eventually: someone cracked open their Apple TV and transplanted the 2.5-inch drive with a 32GB SSD by Transcend. That’s pretty much it — just a bit of hacking, partitioning, re-imaging, and off you go. Do you really even have to ask if putting an SSD in something was worth it?

Verizon offers up Flex Double Play, big savings on landline-less bundles

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Beginning next week, Verizon Wireless will be offering their customers discounts that range from $8 to $12 per month via its new plan dubbed the Flex Double Play. This new service applies to customers who combine a Verizon Wireless service plan with broadband or FiOS TV.

The discount will also apply to customers who have Verizon’s basic 3mbps DSL service plan or the high speed 20mbps FiOS broadband service. However, the said discount will not apply to Verizon’s 7mbps DSL plan or the 50mbps FiOS service.

This new discounted offer is in response to the increasing number of households who prefer to use cell phones instead of landlines. Somehow, this move was an offshoot of AT&T’s similar discounted offerings for its customers who signed up for wireless and DSL service last year.

To quote Verizon spokesman Bill Kula:

“We remain very bullish on the traditional copper-based phone service, but we also recognize that there’s a growing segment of society that wants to have wireless as its principal home service.”
