Gadgetell Review: Cellpoint’s Flamingo Music headphones

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Product: Flamingo Music Headphones
Price and Availability: Currently available and retailing for $49.99
Rating: 8/10
Pros: Stayed in ear well, offered good sound quality, comfortable even with extended wear.
Cons: Nylon cord.
Overall: Would not hesitate to recommend.

The Flamingo Music headphones feature a 24K gold-plated 3.5mm jack (that works with the recessed iphone jack), a 12-guage shielded cable, weigh just about 0.78 ounces, have a frequency response of 12Hz - 22kHz and a 9mm neodynmium rare earth magnet driver.

They retail for $49.99 and are available in chrome, black, white or blistered red. They ship with a very nice fabric carrying case for when they are not in your ears and seven sets of pads for their EarClick system, which should allow just about any ear size to get a comfortable fit.

But enough with the boring specs, lets get on with how I felt about them after some use.

When I first opened up the package that came in the mail, I must say I was a little taken back by the large size of the headphones and when I first took them out of the box they initially felt heavy (at least as compared to other earbud style headphones).

It did take a few tries to get the correct fit with the EarClick pads, they seem a lot smaller than they feel when you try them on, and trust me the headphones are not comfortable with the incorrect size. However after finding a good fit I was pleasantly surprised with just how nice they felt, even with that initial heavy feel in my hand they felt very lightweight when in my ear. I was anxious to try these out for an extended music listening session to see how they held up, both sound and comfort wise.

They are made to “listen to music in traffic safety.” To me that means they let in a lot of outside noise, which can be good and bad. Overall the sound quality was very nice, however when more cars were around I found myself reaching for the volume to be able to hear a little better. But all things considered when you are in an area with a lot of traffic then hearing outside noise really is actually a good thing.

After some use and some thought I do have mixed feelings with these particular headphones, I would not hesitate to recommend them because overall they were comfortable and provided a good sound quality. I am however sort of conflicted on my pro’s and con. A primary source of headphone use for me is while running, so with that I am pleased to say that they stayed in my ear very well and felt good, even during longer runs. However, they have a nylon cord made of a “sports-grade finish” which makes me a little nervous as to long term use. Not to get gross, but when you run you tend to sweat and I have some concerns that the cord will get a little ‘dirty’ after a while, which is something you would not have to worry about with a standard wire covering.

Overall these are a very nice set of headphones, ones that I was, and continue to be very happy with.

Clearwire touts fully open, third pipe “New Clearwire” WiMAX network

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 4:48PM It’s not exactly a surprise that Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have some pretty big plans for their newly-merged WiMAX network, but a recent FCC filing has now revealed some tantalizing details about exactly just what they have in mind. As Ars Technica reports, the two companies foresee the “New Clearwire” WiMAX network as being nothing short of a true “third pipe” into the home, and a fully open one at that. That would let users use any “lawful device” on the network so long as it’s “compatible with and not harmful to the WiMAX network,” and it’d offer non-exclusive wholesale access to the network to anyone looking to hop on the WiMAX bandwagon. The two companies are also promising that customers can expect to get speeds up to 6Mbps on the downlink, and 3Mbps uplink, and that the network will cover 140 million people by 2010 — and a full 220 million by 2017.

Panasonic debuts “hybrid lighting” Pa-Look compact fluorescent bulbs

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 5:19PM LEDs may be snagging the majority of light bulb headlines these days, but Panasonic’s apparently found some room for improvement with compact fluorescents, with it now proclaiming that its new Pa-Look Ball Premium Q bulbs boast the world first “hybrid lighting method.” That apparent innovation consists of a “Quick Lamp” at the center of the bulb, which helps the bulb reach 60% brightness in half the time a conventional compact flourescent takes, and then shuts off automatically once the bulb has reached full brightness. You’ll apparently have to make do with 54 watts of brightness to take advantage of all that, however, not to mention live in Japan.

Conceptronic ships Grab ‘n GO Full HD media streamer

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 9:14AMIn the quickly-growing realm of media streamers, there’s at least a modicum of a chance that Conceptronic’s oddly titled Grab ‘n GO Full HD media player has slipped from the forefront of your mind. If so, the outfit is gunning to jar your memory by announcing that it is now shipping said piece to eager consumers. The release also noted that SAMBA and NFS clients have been added, and it’s pretty much ready to “stream all digital media files to a TV in Full HD 1080p resolution.” Furthermore, you’ll find a gigabit Ethernet jack to handle all that data, and the built-in USB port enables external storage to be added locally. Sorry, still no price.

[Thanks, KJ]

Nokia intro’s the basic 1508

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

We couldn’t help but be amused by the timing of Nokia’s release of its latest addition to the lineup, the 1508. Just when other phone manufacturers are outclassing each other with the release of new advanced features, here comes Nokia introducing a lowly, plain-jane-looking, basic handset. In fact, the 1508 is so simple that it took only a few sentences for Nokia to come up with an official press release. Or maybe it was just that we are so used to Nokia’s lengthy press releases.

Anyway, what should we expect from the Nokia 1508, a mobile phone as simple as this certainly doesn’t have that much to offer. This candy bar style handset boasts of easy keypad dialing, integrated FM stereo, high-speed data connectivity to the internet via cable, text messaging, built-in speakerphone, 3 minutes of voice recording time and memory that will let you store around 500 phonebook contacts plus 400 text messages.

Well, that pretty much sums up the Nokia 1508’s features. A simple mobile phone that can actually answer our most basic needs. Nokia expects to ship the 1508 sometime during Q3 2008 and it will be available in select CDMA markets. Pricing information is not yet available. But with a simple phone such as this, we wouldn’t expect the price to be too much.

PCI Express 3.0 details surface

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 12th 2008 at 11:19AM
PCI 2.0’s doubled-up speed boost was something to celebrate, but think again if you’re looking for such a bump with PCI Express 3.0. The PCI SIG started eking out some details about the new standards, and as of now it looks like PCI express 3.0 will see transfers speeds of 8-gigatransfers per second, compared to 2.0’s 5.0-gigatransfers per second. Channel width and transfer protocol will ultimately determine the amount of information transferred, of course, so the new standard could have some tricks up its sleeves. The good news is that PCI Express 3.0 will use the same connector and will be backwards-compatible with 2.0. PCI Express’ specifications should be complete in 2009 with a rollout in 2010, so don’t go stressing about your motherboard’s I/O options just yet.

Verizon officially unveils the blue Palm Centro

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Verizon Wireless and Palm have officially announced the availability of the Centro, and it will be available in-stores an online beginning today. It looks like the rumors were just about accurate for this release, the handset is indeed the blue model, and the release date was off by just one day. It did come one day earlier than the rumor, which of course is better than one day late, however one has to wonder if Verizon thought it to be bad luck in releasing an already popular handset on Friday the 13th.

Verizon will be offering the Palm Centro for $99, which comes after a $70 mail-in-rebate and along with a two-year agreement. It looks like its just T-Mobile that is left out on the popularity of the Centro, as it has already been launched with both Sprint and AT&T in the past.

Will Disney’s Blu-ray strategy rake in the green?

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

I’ll admit it: every Christmas will probably be a Disney Christmas in my house for the next few years, thanks to a four-year-old daughter who knows why Ariel has daddy issues and a two-year-old son who wants to be Lightning McQueen when he grows up.

As an unrepentant tech enthusiast who also wants to keep his kids happy ever after, you can imagine my curiosity about the announcement from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment about the company’s plans to maximize Blu-ray technology for its DVD releases, beginning with “Sleeping Beauty” in October. Disney is promising live chat rooms as the story of Princess Aurora unfolds on your flat-screen HDTV. Division president Bob Chapek pictures grandparents in one part of the country chatting with grandkids in another part as they all watch the movie together. He also previewed video messaging and an onscreen DVD menu reflecting the weather conditions where you are, all thanks to Blu-ray’s Internet capabilities:

Chapek said Disney’s goal is to “reinvent the experience of watching movies in the home … by laying in a level of interactivity and connectivity that has never before been attempted in any format. This interactive connectivity will help us to connect families all across the country and help make the family room relevant again.”

There is a coolness quotient to all this that, combined with the powerful Disney brand and a vast library of classic films (including those from Disney/Pixar), carries the possibility of helping sales of BD players and playstation 3’s. Other star attractions in the Disney corporate stable - “High School Musical,” “Lost,” “Hannah Montana” - await DVD exploitation in what’s being called the Disney BD Live Network.

At the risk of sounding like Cruella DeVil, Disney needs BD player prices to continue to come down and advances in technology to cut down on disc loading times. The company valued for quality family entertainment needs to ensure safe, secure chatting. And what about those of us who already own the first generation of those classic films on standard DVD? Pricing and piling on those extra features will be key, or else Disney’s desire to cash in on Blu-ray will be wishing upon a…well, you get the high-def picture.
