Asus teases us with a 42-inch LCD TV

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

During Computex, Asus not only previewed its latest Eee PC line-up but some other forthcoming products as well. One of these products was a 42-inch Eee TV which Asus did not specifically highlight, yet it was seen by attendees on display near the Asustek booth. If you recall, this Eee TV was first seen sometime in January and rumored to be released in September.

Still, the lack of detailed information and specifications coming from Asus make us wonder whether Asus will market this TV as your usual LCD TV or something else more special. Not even the people manning the Asus booth were cooperative enough to leak out details about the Eee TV. And so we are left to ponder about it, albeit suspect other possible details until such time that Asus officially announces it.

Some observers found some USB ports and a LAN input on the TV, while others suspect that it would have web-browsing and email capability. Sadly, until the official announcement and release we can only admire this picture.

Nature On Display: When The Earth Is Endangered

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Global warming, nuclear apocalypse, urban sprawl. Nature is on trial and it’s slowly losing the fight. We’ve still got a lot of natural scenery intact, but everyday, beautiful forests and mountain settings are put at risk by the move of human expansion. Nature might one day, become an endangered species.

So what will humans do to retain a piece of out natural past? How far will we go to preserver the feeling we get when we gaze upon a beautiful waterfall or a series of gorgeous trees. Finnish photographer Ilkka Halso’s photographic series ‘The Museum of Nature’ delves into a future which might put nature on the stand as a rare sight.

The Museum of Nature visually documents the possible future of viewing nature. Displaying a series of man-made structures that enclose nature, grasping on to the last hope for humans to view the Earth’s past. These structures would make nature a form of theater, complete with a seated audience.

We suppose that a future such as this is what drives the green activists to continue their fight in saving the spectacle of nature. The Museum of Nature could possibly be a peek into a grim future for nature. The important thing is, that there are at least people who are willing to preserve nature for the viewing of others.

Law and Order CPU; recovering lost/stolen data in a mobile world

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Yes, mobile security is becoming more of a million-dollar-worry for corporations, but what about the hundreds of dollars’ worth of songs on your ipod? Your son’s graduation photos on your digital camera when it gets lost or stolen?

A recent Reuters story details some of the new software and hardware that allows runaway consumer electronics to “phone” home via wireless connectivity; Eye-Fi SD memory cards and GadgetTrak software are mentioned. Both send data back to the original owners, and there are now-famous stories of thieves caught taking pictures of themselves using the Eye-Fi enabled cameras they stole.

I was curious about the relationship between these new security companies and law enforcement: how are police handling the advent of technologies that help them do their jobs?

“We have had quite a few requests for more information from law enforcement agencies that they can provide to citizens,” GadgetTrak founder Ken Westin told me in an e-mail. “Some (law enforcement personnel) are also our customers.”

Westin says his company has worked closely with police officials since GadgetTrak’s launch a year ago - not only to educate them about their software but also to help make it better. “One key element that we are very conscious of is respecting our customers’ privacy while at the same time providing enough information for law enforcement to follow up with and recover the device.  We provide technical assistance to law enforcement with the recovery of the device as needed.”

Thefts on high school and college campuses of GadgetTrak-secure devices usually just involve school administrators and their IT departments, not police. “This gets the device back for our subscriber and the thief avoids a criminal record,” Westin says. “We also then see a drop in theft on these campuses once word spreads that these devices can be tracked.”

As you can imagine, gadget recovery success stories are front and center on GadgetTrak’s website, but not without customer permission. Westin, in fact, emphasizes the potential for privacy abuse as an obstacle in his company’s path to success. His customers are not required to contact GadgetTrak when a device is stolen.

“We try to keep ‘Big Brother’ out of the picture as much as possible, particularly given the potentially invasive technologies that we are utilizing. Some software will utilize a back door into laptops that the company can access remotely. We think this is a bad idea for a number of reasons. Our software is designed to send the data collected directly to the owner of the device. When they need assistance they can then forward the information on to us as well as file a police report with our contact details for technical questions.”

GadgetTrak currently provides tracking software for iPods, digital cameras, mobile phones using blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian OS’s, as well as Windows and Mac laptops. Westin says iphone and iPod Touch products are in the pipeline.

Microsoft sings better tune on Windows Mobile

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Microsoft Mobile Communications Business SVP Andy Lees has said that future versions of Windows Mobile will improve the music “experience.” In his statement, he acknowledged the successful strategy that Apple has followed with the iPhone: by tying the iphone into the wildly successful iTunes + iPod ecosystem, Apple has managed to successfully enter a market where they have absolutely no proven competence.  The other big closed-source player, Research in Motion, has also made moves to bring music and cell phones together.  They recently announced a music service much like iTunes in partnership with a Canadian music company called Puretracks.

The addition of music to the cell phone follows recent trends towards mobile digital conversion.  Ever more gadgets are being replaced by all-in-one wonders.  Rather than carry an iPod, cell phone, and portable internet device, a blackberry or iPhone is now sufficient for all but the most demanding of users.  Microsoft seeks to parlay their desktop computing dominance into a similarly-commanding position in the smartphone market.  Current iterations of music software on Windows Mobile devices are limited to a stripped down clone of the desktop Windows Media Player.  Synchronization between a user’s music library and the mobile device are manual affairs at best.  Microsoft also does not offer the feature set found on other devices, such as over the air downloads and a fully-stocked media store.

In contrast, the iPhone offers a full-featured iPod interface for media playback, and RIM’s upcoming Blackberry music service will no doubt offer a slick and intuitive design.  Microsoft has demonstrated some capability to build such stores, with minor wins such as the Zune Marketplace and XBox LIVE Marketplace.  The as-yet-unanswered question is: Can Microsoft successfully integrate the media efforts across devices, as Apple has?  The iPhone, ipod, and AppleTV all share a similar media platform and buying experience; Windows users are stuck using different systems for Media Center, Zune, and XBox.  Given the sheer volume of Windows Mobile licenses sold, Microsoft stands to become a significant player in media-enabled smartphones.  That’s if it can ever manage to play nice with itself.
