Jawbone to turn heads in the UK

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Guaranteed to turn heads on the streets of London, the San Francisco based Aliph recently announced that the Jawbone headset will now be available in the UK through a partnership with The Carphone Warehouse.

The new Jawbone Bluetooth headset is said to be 50% smaller than its earlier incarnation and boasts of cutting-edge technology in noise elimination.  In essence, beauty and utility are married in this stylish accessory. The new Jawbone brags about its “military-grade NoiseAssassin” technology, which zeroes in on your voice and eliminates all other ambient noise to ensure crisp and clear sound even if you’re in a busy street. NoiseAssassin, as the manufacturer says, was originally developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in its goal to have reliable communications even in battlefield situations.

With models such as “Goldy Lips”, “Blah Blah Black”, and “Silver Tongue”, the new Jawbone is incredibly fashionable. Measuring only 508mm long by 1.27mm wide by 1.27mm thick and weighing a measly 10 grams, grabbing the new Jawbone will be no problem as you strut down the street.

New details, pictures of the highly anticipated Samsung i900

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Basically, there hasn’t been a lot of information known about the Samsung i900, just spy shots and some other uninformative pics. However, recently a Chinese website has released some better looking pictures and some more information regarding the Samsung i900.

So far, it is set to come with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a 240 x 400 WQVGA resolution, a 5-megapixel camera, quadband GSM, 3G HSDPA with speeds measuring up to 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 16GB of internal hard disk space. All of these specs seem to be really nice and high end, you can’t really find similar specs in normal, average GPS. Additionally, it comes with a 1500mAh battery, microSD expansion, FM radio, runs on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, 256 MB of RAM, miniUSB 2.0 connection, TV out, and measures out at 4.40 x 2.20 x 0.51-inches.

Overall, it seems like it is going to be a really nice GPS, and as long as the price remains relatively inexpensive, it should sell pretty well. If companies want to compete with GPS giants such as Garmin and TomTom, they are going to have to do something out of the blue. No word on exact shipping or pricing at this time.

Mozilla offers up Firefox 3 Release Candidate 2

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

As we expected Mozilla has made the next early-adopter release of Firefox 3 available for download. The latest is Firefox 3 RC2 and although the release notes are a little light on the exact updates, its safe to say they have taken care of the issues that were found during the testing of Firefox 3 RC1. This latest download of RC2 is expected to be the last early release and the full, final Firefox 3 is still on track for a June availability.

I have been using RC2 since last night, and was able to update from RC1 without any issues, similar to the last few versions of FF3 it has been stable so far. However, a little friendly warning, as always take caution with any beta or pre-release software.

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Well it looks like the previously rumored Tony Hawk branded Sidekick LX will be hitting the market after all. The new LX will not only be sporting a new look on the outside, thanks to some Tony Hawk graphics, but its also rumored to be packing some more, welcomed internal features. Aside from the new look, the LX is also expected to include video recording, stereo Bluetooth and an updated download system that is said to make it easier, along with more themes and backgrounds available to offer some additional customization. In addition the new LX will include a new feature called Play and Share, which will allow for you to easily share those newly recorded videos. The handset itself is also expected to have a “skateboard look and feel with a grip-tape-texture.”

While the Tony Hawk branded LX will come with the video functionality out of the box, the rest of the Sidekick LX’s currently on the market are expected to get an over-the-air update sometime this summer to also get that functionality added. The Tony Hawk Sidekick LX is expected to be announced and shown off today, with a release date sometime in mid-July. No word yet on pricing.

iPhone 3G and WWDC Announcement Predictions

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

There’s no doubt that an iPhone update is imminent. But while nearly everyone has agreed on that, nobody knows anything definite about the specifics… except that the new iPhone will be compatible with the Microsoft Exchange email services. There’s a link on the main Apple.com iPhone page where you can apply to be a beta tester.

In regards to the iPhone, here’s what we know today:

  • Apple.com lists the iPhone as “Currently Unavailable.” Stock is so low that you can’t buy it. Usually a good sign that a new model is coming out soon.
  • Apple continues to make iPhone sales deals across the globe. Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Australia were all announced with the last few months.
  • A 3G settings screen was found by hackers in the latest firmware update for the iPhone.
  • The new iPhone will most likely be unveiled during Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at Apple’s WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) on June 9th.
  • AT&T is prohibiting retail-store employees from taking vacations between June 15 and July 12, claiming that they’re expecting a “heavy selling period”. They implemented a similar policy last year for the iPhone launch.
  • AT&T executives have said numerous times that all of their smartphones (the iPhone is one of the) will support 3G networking soon.
  • The Apple Stores have been out of stock of the iPhone for weeks. And people are forming daily lines outside Apple stores that still have a few iPhones in stock.

And here are some rumors that the guys at MethodShop.com compiled, about what Steve Jobs might announce at the WWDC on June 9th:

  • Rumor: The new 3G iPhone will be about 20% thinner.
  • Rumor: The new 3G iPhone will have built-in video chat that would allow you to video chat with other iPhones or even computers with webcams.
  • Rumor: The Apple TV is going to get an add-on USB camera that will turn the Apple TV into a video chat system (see item above). How would it work? A picture in picture effect would happen if you were watching a movie on your Apple TV when someone tried to “video call” you from an iphone.
  • Rumor: Just like the iPods, the new iPhone will come in several colors including black [pic] and white [pic]. Several colored iPhone photos have already surfaced on the Interweb. There’s no doubt that black would be an extremely popular iPhone color.
  • Rumor: The new iPhone will have built-in GPS (it’s about time).
  • Rumor: Apple will also announce a new, wireless keyboard specifically for Apple TV, with multi touch capabilities. Basically it will be a super remote control.

Vudu offers up wireless kit for $79

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Vudu has just released a wireless accessory kit for their set-top box. The new kit will allow current Vudu box owners to easily add a wireless connection for $79. While it would have been nice to see the new Vudu boxes begin to offer wireless connectivity built-in, they are also offering a bundle for anyone who is still planning a purchase, the bundle includes the set-top box along with the wireless kit and retails for $349, which offers you about a $30 savings if you purchased each on their own.

While a wireless connection for streaming movies is not always ideal, it is preferred by many simply for the convenience of not having to run a new Internet line out to the TV area. The wireless kit, according to Vudu is plug-and-play and should just take a few minutes to get set up. The kit comes with an adapter that you plug into your home network and also your current Vudu box. After those are plugged in, you should be all set to enjoy your movies.

Hong Kong, China not masters of their domains, says McAfee

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Whenever an Internet security company issues a report or study about the state of Internet security, your first reaction should focus on checking the security of your wallet. Fear became a big part of the marketing plans for security companies ever since the Melissa and I Love You viruses hit around the turn of the new century; Sept. 11th cemented the sales game plan by adding cyberterrorism concerns to the mix.

Tech journalists have to balance that cynicism with the need to pass along information that helps promote safe Internet practices for businesses and consumers. Companies who have been in this space for a long time and spend a lot of money searching for bad software usually get a long look, as McAfee should with its new report, “Mapping the Mal Web Revisited.” The headline for the associated press release says it all: “McAfee Inc. Names Most Dangerous Domains to Surf and Search On the Web.”

McAfee used its own SiteAdvisor software (of course) to investigate the security of global web domain names and found that Hong Kong (.hk) and China (.cn) websites give you the best chance of picking up unwanted spyware, browser exploits, viruses and other forms of malicious code. This casts a potential cloud on all that Western investment money now streaming to China, not to mention the flood of visitors expected this summer for the Beijing Olympics.

The safest country domain to search and surf? Finland (.fi).

McAfee says your chances of picking up malware from websurfing increased 41 percent year-over-year. Picking up a nasty dose of bad code simply by downloading ringtones or screensavers also went up from 2007. As always, kids, consider the source, whether it’s a ringtone or an Internet security study.
