QNAP adds new BitTorrent engine to NAS family, launches TS-409U

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 10:14AM
We’re still struggling to see if this is just a PR push or if QNAP is really introducing something new here, but whatever the case, it’s using Computex to announce a “new” P2P download engine in cooperation with BitTorrent. Said engine will be embedded within its TS-109 II, TS-209 II, and TS-409, and it should enhance download performance as well as add support for DHT / TCP / UDP tracker protocols. Beyond all that, the firm is kicking out an all new Turbo NAS: the 1U rack-mountable US-409U. The unit is based on a Linux-embedded system and includes a 500MHz SoC CPU, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, four hot-swappable bays, online RAID capacity expansion and RAID 0/1/5/6/5+spare disk redundancy support. Regrettably, QNAP didn’t pass along any information in regard to pricing / availability.

Telson handheld does 3D gaming without the goggles

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 11:36AM
We’ve seen companies toss out kit that claims to showcase the third-dimension without requiring a set of those face-consuming spectacles, but we’re having an even harder time believing it would go over well (or at all) on a ‘roided-up do-it-all handheld. Details are scarce on this one, but the Telson prototype / reference model device looks to be hung somewhere between the land of gaming handhelds and unadulterated UMPCs. Within, you’ll find a VIA C7-M processor, 512MB of RAM, a 30/60GB hard drive and a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 resolution panel that’s reportedly capable of displaying 3D imagery without special glasses. Can’t say we’re huge fans of the design / idea / etc., but we’ll be keeping an eye out just in case this somehow makes it into production.

World’s largest 3D display revealed in 4D spacetime

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 5:52AM
var Ooo, ahhh, you feeling that 3D display on your 2D panel? You should, it’s the world’s largest 3D LCD panel from VMJ measuring in at 65-inches. The stereoscopic panel developed with support from VisuMotion features a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 6-ms refresh, 120-degree viewing angle, and DVI and RGB inputs. Best of all, no goofy 3D glasses of any type are required thanks to the incorporation of Sharp’s Parallax Barrier viewing technology. Priced at ¥3.15 million (about $30k) when it starts advertising CosaNostra Pizza around Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong.

Balanzza luggage scale

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Have you ever been at the airport and seen a parade of dazed and elderly Asians, trailing bags that could easily have held a couple of large humans? You were witnessing an immigration, and those bags held every single earthly possession of those people. Seeing one of those sarcophagus-shaped bags always chokes me up because they become a bit of a legacy- those bags live in the homes of immigrant families forevermore. Most often, they’re used to pack several tons of blue jeans and Maybelline makeup, treasures from America, to take back to the homeland for a visit.

Of course, these days, it would be really hard to pack up one of those giant bags without incurring baggage overage fees that exceed the price of a trans-pacific flight. These days my family members use regular luggage and struggle to weigh the unwieldy suitcases on bathroom scales. I want to get everyone a Balanzza luggage scale, so they can use those body bags again without fearing the baggage counter. The Balanzza is a small, 10 oz. device that you simply hook to the handle of the bag, then lift. You hear a beep and then you can read the weight. That’s it. The Balanzza is accurate up to 100 lbs., which is a whole lot of mascara and Jordache.

The Balanzza luggage scale is $25, or you can get a 12-pack for $250.

Dell’s yet un-named mini notebook coming this August

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

While there still has not been an official product announcement it seems that will not stop the details from slowly but surely slipping out. The latest news comes courtesy of Dell, so we can at least be safe to believe its accurate, and places the mini notebook to be ready for an August release. Aside from the release time frame the specs are still mostly unknown with Dell’s senior vice president Jeff Clarke stating quite simply that he is “not going to talk about about the specification of the product.”

What we do know is that the mini notebook will have a VGA port, three USB ports and a built-in card reader. The most important details such as the processor, RAM, hard drive and well basically all the good stuff remain under wraps. It was also stated that the main reason that Dell is coming a little late to the mini notebook party is that they are “working on getting the right keyboard,” with an effort to make it “unique to Dell” and still offer a keypad that “accommodates as best as possible the best user experience for this class of products.”

The notebook is rumored to be called the Inspiron Mini, however I a leaning towards the name “Minspiron” that was coined by Kevin Tofel.

Leaked live images Palm Treo 800w

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Some more images of the upcoming Palm Treo 800w have been making their way around the Internet, the latest however are pretty clear, well clear compared to some previous leaked images anyway, and show off both the front and back side.

The Sprint-branded Treo 800w, as if the “w” was not indication enough is clearly pictured running non other than Windows Mobile as the OS. Overall a slightly better looking Treo than previous models, but it seems that there is nothing much to get overly excited about.
