Arctic Breeze

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Have you ever tried working on a laptop or a super fast desktop PC in a non-air conditioned room? The mercury shoots up pretty fast, leaving you to sweat beads in no time. Arctic Cooling understands that gaming in an uncomfortable environment just ain’t down, hence releasing its latest product - the Arctic Breeze. This portable USB desktop fan helps keep things cool by sending out a refreshing breeze during hot, sunny weather. This 92mm fan won’t wake up the dead thanks to a low noise impeller, offering speeds of 1,200rpm and 2,000rpm that can be adjusted according to how hot you’re feeling. Although powered via USB, it comes with an On/Off switch that does away with the need for you to plug or unplug it. The Arctic Breeze will arrive in time for summer this June, retailing for £8.

Thanko’s solar-powered DAP urges you outdoors

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 31st 2008 at 8:38AM
So we’ve seen a few solar-powered gizmos (that we wouldn’t touch with a ten twenty foot poll), but Thanko’s own sun-lovin’ DAP actually doesn’t look half bad. The Solar Digital Audio Player, from the front, looks like any other ho hum unit, with a 1.8-inch 220 x 176 resolution display, 4GB of internal storage space and a miniSD expansion slot. Flip ‘er over, and you’ll find a thoughtful kickstand that just so happens to have a solar panel slapped right on, enabling the brilliant, outdoor sunshine to give it a few more minutes of life. There’s no official word on a price or release date, but we wouldn’t bank on it ever coming Stateside, anyway.

Berkeley Bionics’ HULC exoskeleton lets you effortlessly carry 200lbs

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 31st 2008 at 6:17AM
Sorry, but squats are so 20th Century. Instead, strap on the HULC — Human Universal Load Carrier — exoskeleton and effortlessly carry an extra 200lbs. HULC not only increases your human payload, but it also “decreases [your] metabolic cost”. In other words, it seems Berkeley Bionics developed this thing for extremely lazy people, those who lose their breath easily, or for those on what they call “long duration missions”. This is no joke, though — the company is taking orders for the suit already.

Sanyo’s projectors are self-cleaning

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Sanyo has introduced a couple of super-bright projectors to the masses - the PLC-XC55 and PLC-XC50. Both are extremely portable and small enough for mounting on the ceiling or placement on stationary desktops, making it perfect for personal use or even in classrooms. Each of these projectors also boast an extra security feature in the form of the durable Security Bar and a PIN number which is required in order to unlock the projector before it can be used. Sounds like the perfect candidates for the education sector where ease-of-use, portability and security are of the utmost importance. Interestingly enough, the PLC-XC55 and PLC-XC50 are equipped with Sanyo’s Active Maintenance Filter (AMF) that makes filter changing a snap.

The use of Sanyo’s AMF system will ultimately lower the cost of ownership by dramatically reducing filter maintenance costs by a factor of ten, while a transparent lens cap will help prevent the accumulation of dust on the lens as well as the ability to replace the lamp from the top cabinet, doing away with the need to remove the entire projector from permanent installations. As for the security bar mentioned above, it is able to accept security wires of up to 11mm in diameter while the required PIN number will definitely act as a deterrent since only the designated administrator will be able to operate the on-board bttons and logo-controlled settings.

  • Lamp: 220W UHP
  • Noise Rating: 27.5dBA (Eco mode), 34.0dBA (Normal mode)
  • Audio: Built-in mono speaker with 7-watts of power Video Terminals: DVI-I, D-sub15, Component (w/ Optional Cable), Composite, S-Video (Mini Din 4), D-sub15 monitor out
  • Audio: Stereo mini-jack input x2 (for computer input) and output (Variable), Analog stereo input for video input (RCAx2)
  • Additional Inputs: RS232C control (D-sub9)
  • Warranty: 3 years parts/labor, 90 days original lamp; Quick Repair Program
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 16.1″ x 3.3″x 10.3″ (excluding protrusions)
  • Net Weight: 8.82 lbs.

The PLC-XC55 and PLC-XC50 will retail for $1,995.00 and $1,495.00, respectively when they’re available this July.

PDA devices temporarily banned from UK theme park

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

A UK theme park has decided to ban PDAs from May 25th until June 1st. Their explanation for it is that they want to encourage families to fully connect with each other.
Anyone caught with a PDA in the park will be asked to leave it in a specially designated “PDA Drop Off Zone”.

Russell Barnes, Divisional Director for the Alton Towers Resort explains; “What we have here is the ultimate short break location where every member of the family can unwind and
have fun. We feel it’s so iportant for parents and kids to focus on nothing more than having the best possible time, we are prepared to take drastic action to ensure that parents really
leave their work behind!”

The goal is admirable, but can you imagine something like this being introduced at DisneyWorld or Six Flags? It wouldn’t probably go over like a lead balloon. I can hear the screams
of discrimination and rights violations already. There’s also safety to consider. These days most people who use PDA’s have Smartphones, those ultra popular phone/PDA hybrids.
If you ban them, you take away people’s phones as well-and as any mom can tell you, a cell phone can be a lifesaver when you’re trying to keep track of your kids in a bustling theme
park. Alton Towers seems pretty dedicated to the idea thought. They say if the experiment goes over well the ban will become permanent.

Samsung BlackJack II (i617) Review - Digital Trends

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Digital Trends reviews the Samsung BlackJAck II (i617) and writes, “Phone calls are straightforward and clear, and the equally effective email system works with AOL, Yahoo! and others. The same goes for Instant Messenger. The 2-megapixel camera isn’t so bad for a phone, but any photos or video requires a good, consistent light source. Pressing the camera button on the keypad turns it on quickly, and pressing the right menu button switches the still camera to a video camera. Both can be easily attached to email or text messages.”
