Minigigi oneQ Premium Season2 MP3 player

Friday, May 16th, 2008

With a name like oneQ Premium Season2 MP3 player from Minigigi, it makes me wonder whether there is a season one model to begin with. This Korea-bound mp3 player is pretty ordinary by all aspects (save for its name), offering 10 hours of playback time, 3D surround sound courtesy of SRS WOW technology, and 2GB of storage space. You will be able to choose from black, white, pink and blue colors that will definitely lift up your mood with its cheery, glossy shade no matter how bad a day you have had at the office. No idea on whether this $40 MP3 player will make its way outside of Korea, but I wouldn’t miss it if it didn’t.

Astak offers up the low-cost Mentor e-book reader

Friday, May 16th, 2008

We’ve been seeing announcements on several e-book readers coming into the market lately. Either the Amazon Kindle has generated a lot of interest from consumers wanting something more, or consumers are really into reading e-books. Now here comes another e-book reader from a company called Astak - the Mentor. Astak is feeling generous as they decided to come up with not just one but three e-book models offering a choice of either a 5-inch, 6-inch or 9.7-inch display.

Astak says that the larger the size of the e-book reader, the more features it would have. True enough since the 9.7-inch would come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as a 1200 x 825 pixel resolution. The other features of the 9.7-inch model are also carried by the other two smaller models. These features include a 128MB of RAM, SD card slot, read up to 8000 pages per battery charge, e-inked screen and support for MP3 playback.

The 5-inch and 6-inch models are set to hit the streets sometime in June for an estimated retail price of less than $200. The 9.7-inch would come later in October at an estimated retail price of around $350.

Motion Sensor LED Spotlight

Friday, May 16th, 2008

A motion sensor spotlight that runs off batteries is perfect for those spots that your outdoor lights do not quite reach or that extra dark hallway at night. You do not have to worry about having to install any new wiring. The light only works at night so your batteries are not wasted, and it will also shut off automatically. You can also adjust the brightness accordingly. This is great for the not so handy man. There is nothing complicated about this product. This is also a great product for those who want some thing that will not affect the electric bill.

UBanana uCan Waterproof MP3 Player

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Considering that most of us get our music fixes from iPods or other MP3 Players, it is not surprising that we want to take our audio experience into the water. If you are the type that wants your music in the pool, you could invest in something that will keep the MP3 Player waterproof, such as the Atlantic EGO iceBar2.

Or you could take the whole mp3 player and make it waterproof, at least up to 3 meters. This is where portable media players such as the uBanana uCan come in.

You may notice that the UBanana uCan sort of resembles the Opera Headphones that we reported on a few weeks ago. I don’t think that there is any copyright infringement going on here. The design is meant to fit on the back of the head, so you don’t have to worry about any pesky cords.

However, I can’t speak about the Opera on this, but the uBanana uCan can float. I guess this is for those times when you dive in and the UBanana slips off of your head. It should be a lot easier to retrieve when it’s not at the bottom of the pool.

The Ubanana Ucan is available for pre-order for about $154. It comes with 1 GB worth of memory and a battery life of about 15 hours.

SmartCapture Lite - Tiny USB device captures and shares video

Friday, May 16th, 2008

If you take tons of video, as I do, and want to send it to all the relatives, or are making funny YouTube videos to embarass your friends, then you’ll love this SmartCapture Lite ($99) which digitizes and compresses the data, making it simple to transfer to your PC or laptop. The size of a USB stick, SmartCapture Lite comes with its own playback software, weighs less than 0.3 oz. and does not require an external power source.

By far the best feature is the one-click settings for popular Apple TV, ipod, iphone, Sony PSP, and more. High quality and low bitrate video make uploading videos to your favorite site easy.

jDome Takes Gaming to the Next Level

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Considering the popularity of World of Warcraft and other MMO games, developers everywhere are trying to figure out how to make the gaming experience more real for the gamer.

This is where devices like the jDome come in to play. As you can see, the jDome is a giant semispherical display that allows a gamer to see a semi-realistic 180 degree point-of-view of their player character.

The jDome is made of a transparent material that allows images to be projected upon it. According to the picture, that projector must be placed at the height of a bookcase.

I’m not certain why the jDome is set up for a person standing rather than sitting, but perhaps that is to make it more real. If that is the case, then the player needs to have some sort of treadmill, ball, or something to stand on that would allow him or her to move around in a stationary position while they are fragging.

I think it is important to note that jDome’s slogan, “Step Into A Larger World”, echoes a certain line uttered by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. I believe he was referring to the Force, but I’m not certain that the jDome is as phenomenal.

We shall see. Unfortunately, the jDome is still a design by John Nilsson. When it does get developed, the designer estimates a consumer cost of about $125-200.

Sony KDL-40W4000

Friday, May 16th, 2008

I expect the Sony KDL-W4000 to be one of the most popular, if not the most popular HDTV of 2008. The 40-inch Sony Bravia KDL-40W400 is a very impressive looking LCD HDTV from Sony’s new W4000 series. The Sony KDL40W4000 is the new direct replacement of the KDL40W3000, which I currently own and love, so I expect a lot from the new W4000 version.

The 40-inch screen has a full HD 1080p resolution of 1920×1080 pixels for the very highest HD format and supports 24p for true 24 frames per second playback from sources such as blu-ray. The Sony KDL-40W4000 features Sony’s latest Bravia Engine 2 image processing technology to produce the best results from all sources by reducing noise, enhancing colours and contrast while keeping all the fine details.

The LCD screen of the Sony KDL40W4000 is a 10-bit panel, which can produce 1024 shade of graduation between colours, rather than the standard 256 which are found of the common 8-bit LCD screens in most HDTVs. Along with a high contrast ratio of 33,000:1, Live Colour Creation and x.v.Colour provide vivid and natural colors with deep black levels for the best viewing experience.

A great new feature of the KDL-40W4000 is Sony’s Picture frame mode, which allows the HDTV to display images rather than a blank black screen when not in use. You can use your own images or photos via the USB port.

Three HDMI 1.3 inputs, PC VGA input, 2x Scart, component, and composite inputs provide great connectivity on a very impressive looking LCD HDTV.
