No, we’re not having problems with our servers today. That purple blob of an image you see above (the one you’ve been waiting to come into focus) is, in fact, already fully loaded and ready to accept the position of accessorizing your outfit.

The Pixelated Posey Necklace hangs from a lilac lace strap and is available from Mod Cloth for $25.

The Future of the Internet by Jonathan Zittrain

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

I’m hopeful, but with a healthy amount of cynicism. Intellectually, I like to keep things sweet and sour.

So, while I loved and devoured and praised Clay Shirky’s newest book, “Here Comes Everybody,” it was important to couch that experience with a dose of anxiety over the current and future states of the Internet with Johnathan Zittrain’s “The Future of the Internet – And How to Stop It.”

Web 2.0 is (to me) more of a social phenomenon than a technical feat. Living in New York there are social mixers around the Web 2.0 hype nearly nightly, and I guess because I’ve always been a happy malcontent, I’m more critical of what we’re all really accomplishing tossing back cheap chardonnay and exchanging business cards.

Zittrain reveals that the Internet and our production of technologies and devices around it are on a path to a “lockdown,” a day where we will stop innovating. I know a roomful of “Web 2.0’rs” who would scoff at the notion.

Stay connected to your cell, VoIP, or landland hands free with Plantronics Calisto Pro handset/headset. A nice device that lets you move around freely without losing your signal. If you’re in the market for a new Bluetooth headset and you happen to also make a lot of VoIP or landline calls, this is a remarkably good deal.

Excellent feature set includes:

* Works up to 300 ft away from the base
* 8 hours of talk time, or 240 hours of standby time, per charge

Becker starts rolling out Traffic Assist 7977

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

During CES 2008, Becker announced the Traffic Assist 7827, and now, they are rolling out a similar GPS, the Traffic Assist 7977. This GPS looks to be one of the best that Becker has to offer. Some of the main features include a 4.3-inch touchscreen, live traffic updates, lane assistance, which basically tells you if you are in the correct lane or not, and maps of all of Europe. Additionally, it uses SD cards for memory expansion, can use USB drives for audio or pictures, Bluetooth capabilities for handsfree calling, and reality view which lets you know when you are coming near a freeway junction. This technology is also similar to Navigon’s Reality View, if you are familiar with that.

This GPS is so far already available in some parts of Europe, but no word on when it would be coming to the States, or for what price.

Rumor: Skateboard legend Tony Hawk to get branded Sidekick LX

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Lots of celebrities are using their special tech product, which in some cases leads them to get their own limited edition version. Well the latest rumor involves pro skateboarder Tony Hawk and the possibility of his own branded Sidekick LX. What offers a ring of truth to this rumor is the fact that Tony Hawk actually owns and uses a Sidekick. Tony Hawk was once quoted offering up some high praise regarding the Sidekick;

“I can’t live without my Sidekick, I take it everywhere with me. It allows me to answer emails as they come in instead of coming home to 100 different messages.”

Unfortunately, this is still just a rumor. However, rumor has it that it will launch on July 16, which is just two days before his famous Tony Hawk Boom Boom Huckjam, which is coincidentally presented by the T-Mobile Sidekick. So all evidence points to this phone actually coming out. We’ll let you know if this rumor can be confirmed as soon as T-Mobile gives the official word, so stay tuned!

BlackBerry 9000 to come in cheaper, 3G-less version

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

by Joshua Topolsky, posted May 5th 2008 at 8:23AM
Apparently, RIM is a bit worried that the rumored high price-point for the forthcoming blackberry 9000 might be a bit too steep for some, and plans to offer a budget version — sans 3G. According to the Boy Genius, an almost identical model of the next-gen phone will be available without high-speed data, and will have a slightly different bezel and back casing (which he’s gotten a picture of, seen up above) — though we’re not sure why they’d go to the trouble of making a different body when only the guts will change. Clearly it’s one of life’s mysteries we weren’t meant to understand.

Samsung launches Instinct promotional site

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 5th 2008 at 7:54AM
Just in case you haven’t learned enough about the forthcoming Samsung Instinct from our hands-on gallery / UI video walkthrough, Sammy has launched a promotional website designed to give you the skinny. Within the site, you can peer at a handful of press shots, get schooled on all of its features and sign up to be notified when it’s ready for your hands to be wrapped around it. Nothing too exciting, but those with the Instinct high on their list of next mobile to own will surely find it worth the click over.

Microsoft gives up on Yahoo

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Remember the tango that Microsoft had while trying to court Yahoo? Well, apparently their attempts were unsuccessful, as the Redmond computing giant has just announced that it will be withdrawing its proposal to acquire Yahoo! Inc. According to Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft.”We continue to believe that our proposed acquisition made sense for Microsoft, Yahoo! and the market as a whole. Our goal in pursuing a combination with Yahoo! was to provide greater choice and innovation in the marketplace and create real value for our respective stockholders and employees.” Good ol’ Steve has more to say after the jump.

“Despite our best efforts, including raising our bid by roughly $5 billion, Yahoo! has not moved toward accepting our offer. After careful consideration, we believe the economics demanded by Yahoo! do not make sense for us, and it is in the best interests of Microsoft stockholders, employees and other stakeholders to withdraw our proposal. We have a talented team in place and a compelling plan to grow our business through innovative new services and strategic transactions with other business partners. While Yahoo! would have accelerated our strategy, I am confident that we can continue to move forward toward our goals,” Ballmer said.

I wonder whether Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang has what it takes to steer the giant Yahoo ship around, as it might have the largest user base to date but if it cannot keep the current subscribers interested in its services, then there isn’t much of a future as well. Microsoft too, will also continue to lose out in the lucrative search engine market. What do you think - will Google now take the next step to swallow up Yahoo? That will definitely not bode well for Microsoft since it will be up against a yet bigger giant, but I sincerely doubt Jerry Yang’s ego will be able to stomach such an affront.
