Hard Disk Crusher Flattens HDDs Like Tin Cans

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Worried about the integrity and security of your pesonal data when it’s time to rid yourselves of them? Let the Hard Disk Crusher help you out.

The device you see above is the Hard Disk Crusher device by EDR Solutions. The Hard Disk Crusher which weighs almost 6 stones can crush HDDs at the rate one per 10 seconds. It runs powered by electricity through a standard outlet and has the capacity to crush 100,000 hard disks without the need for servicing. The caveat: it costs 5,750. Of course, it could especially be useful for companies who want to protect their privacy, but as for me, I could always leave my old HDD in the middle of the road where a ten-wheeler could deliver and even more devastating end to it.

Check out an example of a crushed HDD below sent to PC Magazine’s HQ as a “Visual Verification of Destruction.”

Virgin Mobile unveils the Samsung Slash slider

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Samsung Slash slider – say that ten times fast. Anyway, Virgin Mobile has posted some limited information about this new Samsung slider-style phone on their website making it a pretty sure bet of an impending release. However, all of the details have not been revealed but we are told that is weighs in at a mere 3-ounces and measures 3.8 x 1.8 x 0.7-inches. We can see from the photo and guess from the name that this is a slider. Are they just teasing us by keeping the other details under wraps. Currently unknown is the price or release date, and well, most of the spec’s. What they do list is just the basics, the Slash will include Bluetooth, a speakerphone, voice dialing, a “full color screen” as well as being both text messaging and mobile web compatible.

CTL IL1 Netbook, just like the Eee PC, but it costs $50 less

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

While the Eee PC seems to have launched this ultra-portable race to see who could build the best and lowest priced ultra-portable. Since then we have seen more models than we can remember at this point, some good, some bad, some just plain copies of other models.

Well CTL has just introduced the IL1 Netbook, a seemingly worthy competitor. Overall it is basically the Eee PC, spec wise, but has a nicer price tag at $350. The IL1 features a 7-inch LED-backlit display, along with a 1GHz Via processor, 1GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. Users will also have the option of either a 4GB SSD or a 60GB hard drive and it will run either Linux or Windows XP. In addition it has the usual array of ports and connectivity to include two USB 2.0, Ethernet, 56K modem, microphone-in, headphone-out, 3-in-1 card reader and VGA.

MIT reinvents the Post-It note… with Post-It notes

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted May 1st 2008 at 11:56PM
We’ve seen countless attempts to re-invent the Post-It note, but no one’s ever really managed to improve on the basic design — which might be why MIT’s “Quickies” concept doesn’t even try. The electronic note system is instead based around a digital pen and special pad, which saves your notes as you jot them down on RFID-embedded Post-Its. Software on your PC then does some quick OCR and, according to the inventors, “uses its understanding of the user’s intentions, content, and the context of the notes to provide the user with reminders, alerts, messages, and just-in-time information.” Since the database can also store location information, sticking the note on a book or other object allows you to locate it later using the RFID tag, and you can even have notes SMS’d to their recipients. Pretty wild — but we’re more impressed someone finally found a good use for all those digital pens out there. Check a video of the system in action after the break.

UK crossing guards given new weapon against road rage

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Britain’s lollypop ladies, the equivalent of our school crossing guards here in the US, have just been issued cameras and portable DVRs to record incidents of “lollipop rage” or school zone road rage. The cameras record traffic from both sides and feed their footage to an Archos portable DVR. The system was developed by a British firm known as Routesafe, and several local authorities have already implemented it in their communities.

“It’s unbelievable that we have to take this action,” says the chairman of the Local Government Association’s transport board, “but the lives of children are at risk from increasing numbers of drivers who are so selfish that they are willing to put lives at risk by refusing to stop for 30 seconds at a school crossing.”

Road rage is becoming an increasing problem in the UK. Anyone caught by this new system will be fined £1,000, which equals roughly $2000 US, and also have 3 points placed on their driver’s license.
