Deceive Your Way to Safety: Dummy Security Camera

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Many of us fear for our safety, but unfortunately only few could really afford a security system. For the rest of us, there’s always the dummy security camera.

Nothing says “Careful, I’m watching your every move,” like a security camera. So if you’re going to dupe someone into believing your home is well-protected, there’s nothing better than a fake security cam. Best of all, this fake cam is equipped with blinking LED lights to actually catch people’s attention. Neat, huh? Check it out at ThinkGeek for just 7.

We know a good deal when we see one, this is not it; Linux-based Eee PC, Microsoft Office bundle

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

British online retailer BT Shop is currently offering a bundle that is sure to make just about everyone scratch their head. Lets just hope that some unsuspecting person does not take advantage of this offer thinking its going to save some money, because in turn it will just waste it, that is unless they have another Windows-based computer lying around that needs Office. Sadly the bundle, aside from being incompatible only saves the user £1.76, which is around $3.50 US.

Microsoft’s real-life “CSI” gadget

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

It takes a lot of sophisticated, cutting-edge technology to solve a major homicide within an hour - including commercials, of course.

How many times have you watched the computers used by the fictional forensics detectives on “CSI” and thought to yourself, “if only…” That is, if only databases were that fast, if only touch technology were that advanced, if only location tracking were that integrated…and all of it fast and flawless, naturally. Memo to Grissom: give more shout-outs to your IT guys, OK?

Real-life is starting to catch up to “CSI.” This week Microsoft is hosting law-enforcement authorities from 35 countries for a conference on crime and technology, and the software giant announced it has developed a new USB thumb drive that allows police to quickly extract information from computers suspected of being used by the bad guys. It’s called COFEE (Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor) and Microsoft says some officials have been using it for nearly a year.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has steered its technology toward solving crimes. In 2003 a Toronto detective, discouraged by the rise of online predators targeting children, e-mailed Bill Gates for help. That plea prompted the creation of CETS (Child Exploitation Tracking System), a suite of software tools that allows agencies to better share information on child pornographers. Of course, the marketing gurus in Redmond know when to blur that line between reality and fiction. Yes, those were Microsoft touch-screen surface computers you saw during Season Six episodes of “CSI: Miami.”

OneTouch UltraLink Meter approved by FDA

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

The OneTouch UltraLink Meter has recently acquired FDA approval, and this glucometer from Medtronic boasts wireless information transfer using a proprietary protocol to the MiniMed Paradigm insulin pump, hoping to achieve a tighter glycemic control in the end. Sounds like a much more convenient method of checking the glucose level in one’s blood, helping to make bolus dosing more accurate and much more convenient for patients when compared to manual entry of blood glucose readings. Read on more about the OneTouch UltraLink Meter after the jump.

Medtronic, Inc. today announced that the FDA has cleared the OneTouch UltraLink Meter as the new wireless meter exclusively certified by Medtronic to wirelessly communicate with Medtronic diabetes management products in the United States. This new meter uses Medtronic-certified wireless technology to transmit glucose readings directly to MiniMed Paradigm insulin pumps and the Guardian REAL-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring System. This makes bolus dosing more accurate and easier for patients compared to the manual entry of blood glucose readings.

The OneTouch UltraLink Meter is the newest addition to the long-trusted OneTouch Meter Family - the number one prescribed meter brand - and uses OneTouch Ultra Test Strips, the number-one selling test strip in the United States. Data transmitted from the OneTouch UltraLink Meter can be viewed via Medtronic’s proprietary CareLink Therapy Management Software, the only software that integrates meter, logbook, insulin pump and real-time continuous glucose monitoring information to help patients and physicians more easily assess and manage diabetes.

Medtronic is actively working to provide the OneTouch UltraLink Meter to all of its customers as soon as possible, and is taking a staged product launch approach. All new U.S. customers who order a MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System or Guardian® REAL-Time System will receive the OneTouch UltraLink Meter at no charge. The company will immediately start shipping the new meters at no charge to eligible U.S. customers, and plans to complete this process later this year.

There is no word on pricing for the OneTouch UltraLink Meter as at press time.

i-Bean Head Mounted Video System

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

As far as I can tell, the head mounted video viewers haven’t exactly made a killing in the consumer electronics market yet. The myvu put itself on prominent display at CES Las Vegas this year, and you can read about that on our Sister Site. The Vuzix iWear VR920 was also on display at CES, and it looks somewhat promising.

This next candidate in this growing head mounted video market is the i-Bean. This one is different from the other two aforementioned products because it is not goggles, but an attachment for regular sunglasses or regular glasses. All you have to do is suction cup them onto your usual eyewear.

The i-Bean says that it produces an image that is equivalent to a 21 inch screen from a distance of one meter away. It even has a built in TV tuner, but I’m not sure that it will work when the big HDTV changeover occurs.

As for power, the i-Bean runs on AC power, but you can take it on the road with 3 AA batteries. Apparently, this device is smaller and lighter than most devices of its type, at only 10 grams.

This device certainly costs a whole lot at $385.00, at Mikimoto Beans, a site translated from the Japanese.

CellSensor EMF Detector: Perfect For Hypochondriacs

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

We all know a person like this. You know the one I mean. Every ache leads to a fatal illness. Every headache MUST mean that they have brain cancer. The word is hypochondria, and it’s everywhere we turn.

This sub-branch of extreme personality trait is the perfect crowd for scientists performing research studies on EMF cellphone emissions to prey upon. “Talking on cellphones too much can lead to brain cancer!” This might lead to a hypochondriac cutting their phone use significantly, or even disowning the device all together.

Put their minds at ease with the CellSensor EMF Detector, a home solution for measuring both radio frequency radiation and extremely low-frequency magnetic fields. And the CellSensor doesn’t necessarily only work with cellphones. Move the sensor around your whole house to really give that special someone a scare.

The good news for you non-hypochodriacs is that even if you don’t believe your cellphone is causing any EMF-related health problems, the CellSensor might save your life (or at least your overall health) by proving your skepticism wrong with hard facts. Even if the EMF source happens to be a gadget other than your cellphone, an early warning of an unsafe EMF emission can focus your attention on a potentially dangerous device.

The $30 CellSensor should give you a pretty good idea on what gadgets are safe or unsafe, depending on their levels of EMF. At least they’ll have some hard proof to back up their hypochondriac claims. And if not? Then they can sleep easy, knowing full well that their cellphones are safe for everyday use.

Wireless Display Electronic Scale

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

The Wireless Display Electronic Scale doesn’t force you to sit (or should I say, stand) for an impromptu eye examination each time you want to know your weight, thanks to a wireless remote digital display unit that comes with each purchase.

Accurate electronic scale has a wireless, remote digital display unit that can be removed and wall-mounted or handheld for easier reading. Sleek, heavy-duty glass platform and large, easy-to-read LCD display with clock and alarm. Automatic on/off. Maximum capacity: 400 lbs. Uses 6 AA batteries (not included).

This nifty device can be purchased for $39.99 a pop and would make for a pretty interesting housewarming gift.

Price revision for Xbox 360 and PS3 in Asia

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I don’t know about you, but somehow many people still equate Asians, especially the Chinese, to be too thrifty for their own good. I suppose it is payback time for Microsoft as they are working on price cuts for its Xbox 360 console in Asia, trimming the recommended retail price by a measly 5% to nearly 20% in a quartet of areas throughout the region. South Korea benefits the least with a 5% cut, while Taiwan’s 20GB model will receive a 17% discount. Singapore benefits the most from this price revision exercise with a 19.5% drop. As for Sony, they took the opposite route in Singapore by raising its 40GB PS3 price to $394. Guess accountants from those two companies are busy trying to predict the impact of these price moves, while Nintendo execs sit back and continue smiling smugly knowing that their Wii and DS will still sell well at the current pricing that has remained unchanged for a fair bit now.

Hacked OQO e2 UMPC becomes world’s smallest Mac

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Score one for the UMPC hacker community again, for just recently, a hacker named TFR revealed in OQO Talk that he successfully installed and ran Mac OS X Leopard on his little OQO e2 UMPC. Taking into account that his device came with Windows Vista pre-installed, it’s not that hard to imagine why he’d want to do something like that and run Leopard on the poor thing. As of this time’s writing, the hacker still hasn’t provided any details on how he performed the trick because he’s still not finished with the project and needs to take care of two final issues: video resolution and wwan. However, he promises that he will do so once he gets done. For now, you can take joy in viewing a photo of his Leopard-toting machine (log-in/register to view) and watching his YouTube video proof. Psystar should hire this guy.
