The full featured, do-it-all, yet highly over-priced Eee PC

Monday, April 28th, 2008

While we certainly cannot argue that the $3,200 price tag is worth the money, I am sure the hard work along with the necessary parts would justify the cost, we cannot help to think that its just an Eee PC. Sure its a great little notebook, but that is where it stops, part of the glory about the Eee, is that it is not only fully functional (for most people) out of the box, but it is also very affordable.

The latest highly modded Eee PC to land on eBay has just about everything you could want. Feature wise it is packed and includes a 32GB Patriot XT drive in addition to the standard drive, 2GB of RAM, upgraded Intel Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, an Air Play FM radio transmitter, GPS, Bluetooth, two USB hubs and a custom copper heatsink to help the overclocked processor. The Eee PC also has a touchscreen display, that while is still the original 7-inch size it has a 1024 x 768 resolution and is running Windows XP Professional SP3. Best of all its all crammed in without any addition to the external case and it still weighs just under 3.5-pounds. The auction with about a week still left, currently has no bids with a starting bid of $2,800 and a Buy-It-Now of $3,200. Keep reading for the complete specs…

Nokia N810 WiMax Edition gets listed, priced at Buy.com

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Buy.com has already listed the Nokia N810 WiMax Edition on their site. The N810 is currently listed for $455 with a suggested retail of $479, but as we would expect, is not currently in stock. The listing, although a little early seems to fit the time frame as Nokia announced it would be available beginning in the summer of 2008, however we cannot help but remember that the WiMax coverage would be delayed. Think I can hold off buying a device that is built specifically for a technology that is not even available.

Get the most out of your tube of toothpaste

Monday, April 28th, 2008

I’ve always thought that toothpaste tubes were poorly designed. Try as you might, you’ll never get all of that stupid gel out of there. Crest had a design about 10 years ago that actually seemed to work rather well, it basically had a bag of toothpaste inside of a plastic pump. I don’t think I’ve seen those in some time though. If you’re really dead-set on getting every last bit of goo out of your toothpaste tube, then you might try out the Squeezit Squeezer (I bet you’ll never guess what it does).

This little guy basically works by putting pressure above and below the tube. Just pull one end through when it’s getting low, and you’re good to go. I’m probably too lazy to bother with something like this, I’ll just keep on thinking that I can squeeze a few more uses out of ever tube until I get frustrated and throw it away. Don’t worry about sinking too much cash into this, it’ll only set you back $6.

RolerBall for summer fun

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Fancy getting an adrenaline rush? Why not check out the RolerBall - do make sure you take the necessary precautions beforehand though.

Once inflated this behemoth stands about three metres high, and is rather like a spherical cushioned igloo. The idea, which sounds insane, is to put it at the top of a slope (we suggest a very gentle one with a long unobstructed run-off), strap yourself in, and then roll down the hill trying not to lose your lunch. Inside the centre shell are two harnesses, so you could have two people feeling the adrenalin rush, and probably the queasiness, together. There is a version of this mad sport that requires you to remove the harnesses, add a bucket or two of water, tie in the seal (which comes with the ball and straps into the opening), and launch yourself off. Not in a month of Sundays would we do that, but there you go. The ball is made from a very tough material, and comes with a puncture repair kit, but nevertheless you want to be sure you’re using it in a clear area - and ONLY EVER on private land, and with supervision.

You can pick up the RolerBall for a massive £999 from IWantOneOfThose.com.

Falcon Northwest’s portable FragBox 8500 gaming rig gets reviewed

Monday, April 28th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 26th 2008 at 8:14PM
Oh yeah, you’ve options oozing everywhere for a bona fide gaming desktop that takes up some serious square footage in your domicile, but what about those looking for a potent portable? And we’re not talking laptops, either. Falcon Northwest’s FragBox 8500 — which sports a chassis that hasn’t changed much in years — was recently reviewed by the folks over at PC Magazine, and put simply, it was deemed a “game system without apologies.” Checking in at $1,895, critics found the internals to be “neatly put together,” the unit as a whole satisfactorily mobile and yes, they confirmed that “you will definitely be able to play the DX10-heavy versions of Crysis and World in Conflict at very decent frame rates.” Did you hear that? They said Crysis. Head on down to the read link for the full review of the Editors’ Choice-awarded machine.

Cellular South looking for subscribers, willing to pay your termination fee

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Cellular South, currently available for customers in along the Alabama and Florida Panhandle coast line is looking to attract new subscribers. In a new promotion they are offering to pay any early termination fee that you may be charged by your current provider should you decide to leave. Sounds great, assuming you were unhappy with your current carrier and happened to live in the limited area that they cover. There are a few strings attached but nothing horrible, the credit is limited to $200 and they will not be paying you cash, the money goes towards your future bills with Cellular South. Aside from those few details, there was not any mention of how long this offer would be available.

While this offer will not apply to many of our readers, it does bring an interesting point that if a smaller cellular company is willing (and able) to pay termination fees from other providers how necessary they really are for the bigger guys. I mean they must be making enough even without them, of course without early termination fees we are likely to see prices of phones go up and subsidized models decrease in availability. Hopefully some of the larger carriers will take note and begin to further change their ETF policies.

Rumors swirl of Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic

Monday, April 28th, 2008

by Ryan Block, posted Apr 27th 2008 at 9:20PM
Details are fuzzy right now — and what details there are have been officially denied — but the Japanese press is having a bit of a field day over the possibility of a Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic. Apparently Goldman Sachs, Sumitomo, and Daiwa own some 67% of Sanyo’s equity, and as Japanese paper Yomiuri reports, are looking at the possibility of transferring said equity to or otherwise forming a partnership with Matsushita. Again, both Matsu and Sanyo are denying the report as of now, so it’s all still up in the air as the salarymen figure out whether to combine both companies to make a corporate entity larger than even Hitachi (which currently sits at the top of Japan’s heap).
