Michigan woman guilty in Craigslist murder for hire

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

A Michigan woman faces 30 years in prison for several charges, including intent to commit murder resulting from her attempt to hire someone to kill her lover’s wife. Authorities say Anne Marie Linscott, 49, used the popular site Craigslist to recruit a hit man. Respondents to her advertisement of a “freelance position” were told she was looking for “silent assassins” and asked to “eradicate” the victim for $5000.

She also provided personal info on the victim such as name, age, and place of employment. Linscott met her lover, identified only as Duane, when she took an online course several years ago. As part of a deal made between Linscott and the government, prosecutors dropped charges that she had left an explosive device outside the victim’s home in April of 2007. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

This is not the first time Craigslist has made the news. Earlier this month, police in Rye Brook, NY used the service to conduct a prostitution ring, leading to a half dozen arrests, and last month an Oregon man lost everything he owned after someone posted an ad on the site offering the contents of his home for free. Scams involving Craigslist seem to be increasing at the same time as the site’s overall value. In fact according to a report by researcher Classic Intelligence Craigslist is poised to make over $80 million in revenue this year. So far there has been no comment from Craigslist regarding this latest misuse of the site.

Asus says June will see the end of Eee PC battery issues, fingers crossed

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Now that the upcoming Asus Eee PC 900’s release date is drawing near, Asus is facing a bit of a predicament. For you see, Asus is experiencing a battery shortage right now, and if this problem persists till next month, there could be a lot of lost revenue for Asus here. But Asus Chief Executive Jerry Shen was confident enough to say that “ninety percent of the battery problems should be resolved by June but it could still affect April and May Eee PC sales.” And rightly so, because as you can imagine, less battery units produced means less Eee PC’s to manufacture. And as a company who’s right at the top of their game, Asus can’t afford such a blunder. The 7-inch Eee PC wouldn’t have made it to the 1-millionth mark if there were big problems on battery production, don’t you agree? But of course, as no one of us here is a clairvoyant or has any ability to see the future, there’s no telling just how this situation might turn out.

BenQ rolls out E800, C850, C750 compact digital cameras

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Apr 23rd 2008 at 11:19AM Those that like their digital cameras entry-level and nondescript now have a couple of new options to consider from BenQ, which has just announced its new E800, C850, and C750 models. Kicking things off, the E800 is an 8-megapixel shooter, with a 3x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, ISO settings up to 1600 (no promises on quality), and the increasingly common face-tracking and smile-catching features. The C850 (pictured above) and C750, on the other hand, get a little bit fancier with leather-wrapped handles, but otherwise boast many of the same specs, with the C850 staying at eight megapixels and the C750 dropping down to seven. No word on prices just yet, but you can expect the C850 and C750 to hit “select countries in Europe and the Asia Pacific region this month, with the E800 launching “worldwide” by the end of May.

An HP iPAQ 900 Series smartphone for AT&T?

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

A new HP iPAQ smartphone has just received the FCC kiss of approval, and we find that might actually be a member of the HP iPAQ 900 smartphone series, to be called HP iPAQ 910 for the AT&T network.

Now while this new smartphone has a slightly intimidating facade, not to mention that it’s colored in an aggressive black, it’s interesting to note that this phone is not just about business. It’s also about the other, equally important things in your life that make you happier, like a built-in GPS system, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Quadband GSM connectivity and support for expandable micro SDHC cards. And take a look at that screen. That’s 2.5 inches of QVGA real estate for you right there, so you can make the most of framing for the built-in 3-megapixel camera.

Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional reinforces this device’s status as a business machine, while a Marvell PXA270 420MHz processor can be found powering it under the hood. As of this time’s writing, this item is not yet available for release yet. So stay tuned for the latest as we update you with info as they become available.

Buffalo LinkStation Mini

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Buffalo Technology recently rolled out its LinkStation Mini - the smallest and quietest Network Attached Storage(NAS) device from Buffalo’s stable so far. Don’t let its size fool you though, as it is more than capable of storing up to 1TB of data inside courtesy of a couple of 500GB 2.5″ hard drives within. It performs admirably through a Gigabit Ethernet connection, and measuring a mere 40mm x 82mm x 135mm, it will a snap carrying it around wherever you go. Your shoulders also won’t feel like breaking as it weighs just 500 grams. Using passive cooling methods, there is no need for a fan and hence, it operates at a much quieter pace compared to other portable NAS devices.

Sony Ericsson’s upcoming G502 “Emelie” revealed

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

The Sony Ericsson G502, codenamed Emelie was originally rumored to get its official unveiling during this past CTIA, but that came and went without an announcement, until now that is. While this is an unofficial announcement, the folks over at the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog have decided to beat Sony Ericsson to the punch and show off Emelie a little early. The official announcement from Sony Ericsson is expected to come this Wednesday April 23, but until then lets review some of the details.

From the picture it appears to be a hot looking candybar style phone, but that aside the G502 will feature a 2-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera with a 4x zoom and recording capability, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, USB 2.0, 32MB of internal memory with a Memory Stick Micro card slot for additional storage and is HSDPA-enabled. The G502 is expected to have Google Maps for Mobile and the Access NetFront web browser pre-installed and also have support for Exchange Activesync.

While the G502 is expected to be announced on April 23, the rumored availability is sometime during Q2 2008, no mention of any pricing details, I guess we will have to wait till Wednesday for that.
