Karim Rashid-designed Globalight champagne cooler steals the show

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 16th 2008 at 8:29AM
Typically, you’d think a pricey bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne would be the star attraction on a night out, but we’d have to suggest otherwise if said container is being toted around in this thing. The Karim Rashid-designed apparatus, which is limited to just 500 pieces worldwide, is said to be a “modern reinterpretation of the traditional French chandelier.” As for utility, it promises to keep your alcohol chilled for four solid hours, and considering the built-in LEDs will also flicker out after the same amount of time, we suppose that’s a good indicator of when it’s time to toss ‘er back and get going. Here in the US, a handful of the Globalight’s will be available exclusively at select W Hotels, but you’re not unboxing one without laying down $4,500 first.

Streaming Networks iRecord Pro offers up full res recordings

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 16th 2008 at 10:46AM
Ah, D1, that most professional of video recording resolutions. Streaming Networks’ new iRecord Pro bests its previous iRecord offering with some fancy 720 x 480 recording, in addition to new DVR functionality and the ability to convert video formats without a computer. Given the quantity of content we’re consuming on the go these days, there’s certainly room for a device that can easily nab and convert video from our TV setup for some viewing on the move, but time will tell if Streaming Networks has hit the sweet spot with this $260 device. It’ll be available sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Circuit Board Mouse Pad

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

For the total computer geek, this mouse mat is perfect for you. Each mouse mat is made from a genuine recycled circuit board and has been built this way to combat the problem that 85% of printed circuit boards end up in a landfill when finished with. By buying this mouse mat, each person is doing their little bit towards a greener planet.

On the other hand, it’s quite cool anyway so even if you don’t think green, it’s well worth investing the £8 ($16) to buy one. I just hope that all the sharp solder has been smoothed over.

The only snag with the circuit board mouse pad is that optical mice do not work as well because the surface is slightly reflective which causes the optics to spaz out a little. If you still want one then you will need to dig out your old roller ball type mouse. Also note designs will be different as circuit boards all tend to differ in colour, size and layout.

Lego Chess Set will bring back childhood memories

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

As a child my favorite toys were easily my Legos. There were few other toys that could capture my imagination as those tiny bricks so often did. Then again, it was rare to find something that let you express your creativity as well, either. These days there just isn’t time to sit down and play with them like I used to, however, thanks to this new chess set, I might just have a good excuse to have Legos sitting in my living room.

Each chess set is made up from 2,481 pieces, which is surely enough to keep you entertained for a little while. Then once you’ve finished, you can go on playing with your toys and claim that you’re just playing chess.

This special Lego Castl Giant Chess Set will go on sale July 1st for a whopping $300. It’s a bit more than you’d ordinarily shell out for a similarly-sized set, however, I think it would be well worth it, if only for reasons of nostalgia.

Third Hand Adjustable Parts Holder

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Don’t you just wish sometimes that the water you drink straight from the tap has been irradiated with nuclear waste so that you can grow an additional limb to help out with the house chores? The Third Hand Adjustable Parts Holder saves you all that biological headache.

The Third Hand Adjustable Parts Holder might not be quite as incredible as having an actual third hand, but it’s still very useful and always ready to assist. Two adjustable arms with alligator clip jaws hold parts in place and the magnifying lens is perfect for getting a detailed view of your work area. Great for holding circuitboards when performing soldering or doing precision repairs or assembly.

The Third Hard will retail for $6.99 a pop.

Jabra M5390 dual BT headset has “leave me alone” written all over it

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Noise-canceling headphones be gone! Who needs inferior products such as those when you can comfortably sit back with two calls simultaneously with the Jabra M5390 dual Bluetooth headset? Talk about trying to tell everyone around you that you are busy, and can’t be disturbed no matter what. This mind-boggling device, in my honest opinion, is so dumb that it’s brilliant!

With the Jabra M5390 dual Bluetooth headset, you can take calls from two different devices, like say a GSM handset and a Skype phone, at the very same time. It offers DSP noise canceling technology itself, although I’m not sure how well that would really work when you’re trying to listen to two different sounds at a time.

Other features include USB 2.0 connectivity via a Bluetooth dongle, and a range of 70 meters. That way, even if you accidentally cut off your ear and dropped it down the elevator, you’d still be able to hear your calls. Or not. And it stays on standby for nearly 60 hours, with talk time billed at 6 hours, give or take. But don’t rush out with your credit card yet, cause there still ain’t no pricing details on this baby. What? Of course it’s for sale, cheapskate.

Epson and E Ink partner on controller IC for e-paper displays

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 15th 2008 at 8:03PM
Epson and E Ink, two mainstays in the electronic paper realm, have pooled their resources in order to develop an all new display controller IC set to enable “faster navigation, multitasking and real-time pen / keyboard input.” The S1D13521 chip is slated to be used in E Ink’s Vizplex-enabled electronic paper displays (EPDs), and it’ll also be making an appearance in said company’s forthcoming AM300 Broadsheet prototype kit (pictured). In layman’s terms, this device should speed up the user interface considerably, as it will enable the display to “perform up to 16 tasks in parallel and support smooth and responsive pen input devices for annotations and sketches.” As for availability, we’re seeing that samples ($18 apiece) should make their way out next month, while production quantities won’t be able to scamper free until August.

[Thanks, Jack]

24.4 megapixel Nikon D3X DSLR in the works?

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 15th 2008 at 10:19PM
Some entirely too ingenious hackers have found a reference to the rumored D3X deep within the bowels of Nikon’s D3 firmware. The reference includes a list of resolutions available to the upcoming shooter, and it’s apparently set to max out at a potentially Higgs Boson-inducing 24.4 megapixels. Word has it that this sensor is likely a variant of the megapixel monster behind Sony’s upcoming A900, but since this is all being extrapolated from a few numbers hidden in some firmware, we’re going to try not to get too ahead of ourselves at this point.
