Sony Ericsson K850i Review - OS News

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

OS News reviews the Sony Ericsson K850i and writes, “The picture and video Cybershot camera application is very good. It has a multitude of features, ranging from flash light on/off/auto, night mode, self-timer, mic on/off, white balance presets, exposure support, effects, scene mode, macro support, autofocus support, red-eye reduction, ISO 100 to 400 and digital image stabilization. The only things missing is some optical zoom, ability to use the videocall camera to record and VGA video recording (it only goes up to QVGA at 30fps, sample 1 and 2). Also, while the camera is protected by glass, this glass acquires sweat pretty easily… A nice touch is the VideoDJ application that lets you add clips, images and music in a mobile video editor that it’s able to export as a new clips — with transitions applied and effects.”

Right on cue, Nokia’s WiMAX-enabled N810 Internet Tablet has surfaced at CTIA 2008, and yep, this critter is destined to go on sale here in the US of A this summer. Beyond that, you’ll notice the familiar 4.13-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and even a built-in webcam for video calls, Mozilla-powered browser, integrated GPS / media player, 2GB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. Heck, Nokia even touts this thing’s ability to “access the Internet over WiFi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology.” Also announced today is the freshly updated OS2008, which includes an enhanced e-mail client, support for Chinese character rendering in the browser and RSS feeds and “Seamless Software Update functionality” to boot. Needless to say, said OS will come standard on the currently unpriced Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition — which is scheduled to land wherever WiMAX connectivity is available — but existing N810 / N800 owners will also get the OS upgrade free of charge in Q2.

Painting the town magenta

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

After yesterday’s very real and not-at-all-fake story about Deutsche Telekom demanding Engadget discontinue using the color magenta, and today being what it is, we’re putting up some new wallpaper on all the Engadget sites and ever so slightly tweaking Engadget Mobile’s logo. We hope you approve!

P.S. -In a related side note, our old pals at Phone Scoop pinged us earlier this morning to let us know they’ve gone magenta for the day in an act of solidarity! Much love, Phone Scoop! Oh, and now so did Phone Arena!

Driverless vehicles to race at Robotic Grand Prix

Your favorite driverless vehicles from the DARPA Urban Challenge are getting set to tackle yet another task — speed racing. Yep, Junior, Boss (pictured) and Ben will all be greasing their gears in an attempt to outrun the others around one lap of the 1.97-mile, 11-turn circuit, all without smashing into walls or hailing a motorist to take over. Unfortunately, all three won’t be on the track at the same time — which ensures that no green / red shell ejections will have an effect on the outcome — but those interested in seeing this in person can head on down to Long Beach on April 20th.

HP tries to bring the “top” back in desktop with Pavilion m9200t

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Usually, when someone asks me what kind of computer would be a great buy, I’d just tell them to stay away from clunky desktops to make sure that they don’t get something that’s half-baked (a lot of desktop PCs are like that nowadays). Many desktop PCs are simply not worth the second look that they used to command. Plus it’s easier to work with a mobile. But in continuing its tradition of trying to bring back the sex in desktop setups, HP rolls out the Pavilion m9200t. It’s a media-centric desktop PC that’s so full of features, HP didn’t need to include a keyboard and mouse in the sales package… just kidding!

The m9200t can be called an entertainment powerhouse, and that would almost be an understatement. It features a 1TB hard drive, a Blu-ray Disc burner, built-in photo editing software, a digital TV tuner, TV recorder, and an Easy Backup Button that lets users quickly make back ups of their computer files. Right now, you can get it for $799, but you might also want to check out HP’s “recommended configuration” setup, and that one will set you back $1,429. You think the extra $600 goes to HP’s brilliant “configurators?”

3Tb of Removable Storage

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

The RAIDFrame Backup system has been created by a company named Highly Reliable Systems and works with removable cartridges which can store 3 Terabytes of data. The 1 Bay version carries the 1 cartridge and attaches direct to your server or PC via USB or eSATA. With the device being RAID it means that no special drivers are required to read the data as the server will see the RAID array as 1 drive.

RAIDPacs are made of 3 standard SATA drives which can be replaced as needed. The RAID controller is built in to the device meaning that as soon as the RAID pac is connected up, it just shows as removable storage.

All connections on the RAIDFrame are standard from it’s eSATA connection to it’s molex power connector and as it is all self contained it makes it very easy to use. Without RAIDPacs the system costs $981 and with a RAIDPac it will set you back $2306.

Motorola’s Z9 with GPS goes for a ride on AT&T

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Just like we heard, AT&T is now offering Motorola’s MOTO Z9. $150 (after $50 on-line discount and 2-yr contract) nabs the new slider with GPS for AT&T’s rebranded TeleNav service — now called AT&T Navigator. It’s also stuffed with microSD expansion, stereo Bluetooth, and quad-band GSM with WCDMA 850/1900 supporting 3.6Mbps HSDPA data. Surprisingly, the 2 megapixel camera we saw in the early prototype last year has been whittled back to 1.3 megapixels. Come on Moto, what’s 0.7 megapixels between friends?
