Sony DRC-BT815; Turn any headphones wireless

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Love your white Apple earbuds, but are tired of getting tangled in the wire. The Sony DRC-BT815 will come to the rescue. Plug any pair of headphones into the DRC-BT815 and they become pairable with any Bluetooth audio device or phone. Including an embedded microphone, the DRC-BT815 can also be used as a hands free headset for your mobile phone.

It could use a little more juice, it offers just 6 hours of usable time, thanks to the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. At $130, the DRC-BT815 isn’t going to fly off shelves, but hopefully it finds a place in my pocket.

Eight Monitor Setup Allows You to be an Evil Overlord

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

If you ever have dreams of being an evil villain like the one in a James Bond film, you might want to invest in the Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display. This unique set up from an oddly-named company called Humanscale has a frame for eight monitors.

Not only this setup perfect for evil villains, for anyone who is into multi-tasking. I myself usually have three applications going on one screen. For example, as I type this article, I have Firefox running with five tabs, Microsoft Word, and Windows Media Player so I can watch a DVD while I work.

Just think of what I could do with eight monitors! I could easily multiply my attention span to eight times, twenty four if I follow my current pattern. With all of these applications going on, I could easily work out my plan to…rule the world! Ha ha ha ha ha!

Okay, I’m not a megalomaniac, but I could easily multiply my productivity with this. I find it odd that the frame does not have the metal support pillar directly in the middle, but off to the side. At least that metal branch is there for added support.

This unique monitor mount should be available sometime this year, but I’ve heard nothing about a price.

USB Owl for your desktop

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Now here’s yet another desktop toy for you to fool around whenever the boss isn’t looking - this time, it comes in the form of an USB Owl that boasts a fair number of action combinations to keep you entertained. He is able to move his eyeballs all over the place (within the confines of his eyes, of course) as well as rotate his head in an attempt to elicit a chuckle or two from you. Unfortunately, I don’t think forking out $26 for something like this is worth it. Isn’t the USB Whack It so much more entertaining?

2GB iPod Shuffles Now In Stock

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Back on February 19th, I wrote about the announcement from Apple that they dropped the price of the iPod Shuffle and were adding a 2GB model to be released “soon” - well today is that day.

Apple.com was down for a bit this morning releasing a whole new slew of products, including the 2GB iPod Shuffle. The new new 2GB model of the iPod shuffle can be picked up for $69.

The popular ipod shuffle is just half a cubic inch in volume, weighs just half an ounce, features an aluminum design with a built-in clip and comes in five colors—silver, blue, green, purple and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition.

If you’re looking for something that just plays music but found the 1GB model just wasn’t big enough - you really should pick up the 2GB model. I may have to get one for myself!

Nokia Morph concept phone is wearable

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Always bugged about the dust that gets stuck behind your mobile phone screen that you cannot get out? Well Nokia has just the thing for you. Nokia is out with a concept phone called the Morph which is definitely the cleanest phone ever. This latest concept from Nokia hopes to use nanotechnology to great advantage in a cell phone in order to give the phone a flexible body that has a transparent display and can be twisted around and reshaped according to the user’s whims. Even the electronics and the circuitry inside will be highly flexible so that this phone can be shaped and stretched into any form. You can even bend it into a bracelet to wear around your wrist or bend it into a tablet form so it can fit anywhere. This way you can even clean it up.

The concept has been developed by the Nokia research center in collaboration with the Cambridge University. Though the actual phone is many years away you can always have a glimpse of the future on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Go take a look, who knows 10 years from now you could have that wrapped around your wrist.

Coolest MP3 player ever …

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Sure, it doesn’t have a widescreen multi touch interface or an accelerometer that can change the image depending on which way you turn it, but it looks like a LEGO, man! Can an mp3 player be any cooler? At least in the “shuffle variety?”

It looks just like those infamous, overpriced bricks from Denmark that kids just love to build with . Buttons are incorporated into the design as the nubs that would work to interlock the blocks in an actual Lego. There are volume, pause, play, forward and backward controls as well as an on/off button. Primary colors of blue, red, yellow, green and white are available and work on a built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery for up to 6 hours of play time. There is no on board memory, but songs can be stored on microSD cards up to 2GB max.

Cost is $46.

For those who already have their ipod, there is a cool Lego like stereo dock which has stereo speakers, all applicable buttons and a variety of colors. Cost is $40. And for those on the go but without a pair of headphones, there’s a Lego-esque plug-in speaker set which comes with volume controls built into the lego in a similar fashion … $16.99.

Too bad there isn’t a Lego version from Bug Labs.

One-time use battery for your iPod

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Every now and then I see a product that will just have environmentalists up in arms. Usually these are products that use unnecessary amounts of power for nothing more than one’s own amusement. However, this time it’s simply a battery that is intended for a single use. This Cellboost will keep your iPod going during those times when you absolutely must listen to some tunes.

This iPod-compatible Cellboost is exactly what it sounds to be. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Cellboost, which gives you power for your phone for short periods of time. I understand the use of such a gadget, as phone calls can be extremely important, if not life-saving in some cases. However, I wonder just how much one might actually need to listen to music.

If you don’t really mind the fact that you’re buying a battery that you intend to use only once (mind you I haven’t purchased a non-rechargeable battery in years) then this product is pretty cool. It will work with any dockable ipod and will net you up to 8 hours of playback. The price isn’t bad, as you’ll only be charged $5.99.

Electronic sports bra from NuMetrex

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Your aerobic exercise routine may not be a bust, but it will be more efficient and productive if you monitor your heart rate and keep it in the target zone that’s right for you. But those chest straps that measure electrical voltages from your heart . . . so ugly and geeky. And using a wrist-only device to measure your pulse instead just doesn’t work as well.

But suppose they made a pre-wired sports bra with tiny electrodes knitted right into the fabric, electrodes that could sense your heart’s electrical signals? Suppose a tiny transmitter, snapped into a small pocket in the front of the bra, radioed readings from the electrodes to a digital heart-rate monitor/watch on your wrist? And suppose this wired device looked pretty much like a regular sports bra?

That’s what NuMetrex has done with a sports bra wired to send your heart-rate data to a digital readout for real-time monitoring. Prices for the bra alone start at $49, not much more than a wire-free brand-name sports bra. An entry-level package featuring bra plus transmitter and watch (with time, date, stopwatch, alarm, and heart rate limits) is $99.

OK, now the crucial question. A sweaty sports bra can get funky pretty fast. Is this, miracle of miracles, a washable electronic device? Yes. And you don’t even have to hand-wash; machine will do fine. The company says you can rack up 100 machine washings with no effect on performance, and even after that their electronic boob job continues to work with only slight error readings. Order one in red or a pretty deep pink called razzleberry before the end of February, and NuMetrex will send $5 to the American Heart Association.

VAIO Graphic Splash Expression Collection verbosely lets you style your Sony laptop

While no product should ever have a five word name, the 1,200-piece limited edition VAIO Graphic Splash Expression Collection throws branding 101 to the wind and, like a few other lines before it, pairs Core 2 Duo-based Vaio FZ laptops with three patterns (Victorian lace, flora, and leaf) and three colors (pink, blue, and black). That’s a grand total of nine possible looks, starting at $1,300.
