The case of Alienware’s disappearing m15x edge lighting

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The forum jockeys riding NotebookReview have whipped themselves into a rightful tizzy over their new Area-51 m15x laptops. It seems that the first round of recipients received their swank gaming machines with that programmable edge lighting intact. The rest lost it completely without even a hint from Alienware and certainly without the consent from its paying customers. The situation then turned ugly when at least some owners complained only to be told by Alienware’s support that the power button was the 6th promised light zone, not the LCD edge. Now the good news. The light tubes are in there, but for whatever reason, a software patch must be applied to activate them. Crazy, right? The patch is available just beyond that read link.

HTC Shift finally launching in Europe

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The long awaited HTC Shift will soon be available in the European market. Beginning February 19, 2008 Expansys will be offering the device for $1720, about 1185 Euro. Orange is also rumored to be launching a branded version of the Shift in March, but no pricing has been leaked from Orange.

The HTC Shift features a 7-inch touchscreen display, a full QWERTY keyboard, 1GB RAM and a 30GB hard drive, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 along with support for quad-band GSM/GPRS/Edge, 3G HSDPA.

While the HTC Shift is a solid device with a nice set of specs, the price tag does seem to be a bit limiting. Ultra-mobile prices are starting to drop and this seems to retain that price premium. For $1720 you can get an average full sized notebook or desktop along with a budget UMPC for those on-the-go needs.

Fancy yourself a do-it-yourselfer? Have a taste for the acoustic warmth our audiophile friends swear can only be delivered by vacuum tubes? Good, we’ve got the amp for you. Elekit of Japan just introduced their flagship TU-873KEII tube amplifier with a price set at ¥83,790 (about $780). The amp has a rated output of 8W x 2ch (8ohm), 10Hz - 50kHz frequency response, 106dB S/N ratio, and pretty blue ring up front to compliment your glowing tubes. You can even swap out the tubes until the sound is just right. With a March production run of just 300 units you might even have it assembled in time for Summer.

Ring-ring-ring Batphone!

So this new AbleComm spinoff RedHotPhones is selling tons and tons of phones — all red — including replicas “inspired by Batman”. Definitely not the amazing new Christopher Nolan retelling, we’re talking original campy-ass 60s Batman. We’re not sure what kind of person would spend $112 on a novelty landline-phone with no way to dial out (probably the same people that bought the $300 Shakespeare bust back in the day), but buy it fast, we heard the mayor of Quahog, Rhode Island is filing suit.

Self-propelled glider uses ocean’s heat to power itself

We’ve seen autonomous ocean gliders before, but the team at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has just completed the first successful run of a glider that doesn’t require its own power — instead, it uses the the heat difference between the warm upper layers of the ocean and the colder depths to propel itself. Not needing an internal power source let the glider traverse the Virgin Islands Basin between St. Thomas and St. Croix at depths of 13,000 feet over 20 times when it was launched in December, and the team estimates that it could run for another six months if necessary. The ocean’s heat differential is a “virtually unlimited energy source,” according to one Woods Hole researcher — hmm, beach-charger, anyone?

The rearview mirror camera does not record what is going on behind you. It is a $450 replacement for a standard rearview mirror with a camera mounted on the front, an SSD slot and a tiny lcd monitor. It ought to take the BS out of insurance claims, you cannot really use the “he came out of nowhere defense” when there is video evidence of your less than stellar driving technique. On the other hand, neither can the other guy. It is a victory for evidentiary procedures if nothing else.

Mustek’s convergence device ready for 2099

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Mustek just sent out a press release extolling the virtues of their latest design, the PF-700, a convergence device for digital picture from lovers that must get up early.  It sports a 7” TFT LCD display as well as an integrated alarm clock with dual snooze alarm.  It will be available in March for $149.

The full feature list is below and it looks nice:, atomic clock, remote, but the kicker for me is “calendar up to year 2099”.  That means should you live to see that (91 years from now), you’ll say, “darn stupid Mustek, I knew this was going to happen.” Of course by then we’ll all be driving flying cars and eating all meals in pill form.

Features:

• 7” TFT Color LCD
• Directly View Digital Photos From Memory Card
• Auto Photo Slideshow with Multiple Transition Effects
• Split Windows Slideshow Display
• Indoor Temperature Display
• Clock and Perpetual Calendar Up to Year 2099
• Illuminated Digit on Reverse Display

Release after the link.

Release:

Mustek Digital Photo Frame/Alarm Clock Has Excellent Bedside Manners
— New PF-E700 Features Seven-inch Photo Display Plus Alarm Clock, Indoor Temperature Gauge, & Snooze —
PF-E700

IRVINE, CA, February 7, 2008—Mustek, a leader in consumer electronics for the digital lifestyle, is introducing the ultimate bedside companion, the new PF-E700. Designed to save desk space by integrating several functions into one, the PF-E700 is a versatile convergence of digital photo frame with built-in alarm clock, calendar, indoor temperature gauge and mp3 player.

The PF-E700 offers a high-resolution (480 x 234), seven-inch TFT color LCD to view photos from most available memory cards (SD/SDHC/MMC/MS-Pro DUO/CF), as well as videos in AVI and M-JPEG formats. Unlike similar convergence devices, the PF-E700 does not crowd its dedicated photo screen with time, calendar or temperature digits; instead that illuminated information is reversely displayed on the bottom of the player to maximize space for photography appreciation. Photos can be viewed individually or in auto slideshow mode with multiple transitions on the full screen or in split windows.

The dual “snooze” alarm clock helps wake the user up alert and aware of the time, temperature and date. The backlight can be selected as continuous, an important advantage in early morning darkness.

In addition to reading photos from memory cards, the PF-E700 has a fast USB 2.0 port for USB thumb drives or connecting to a PC.

The Mustek PF-E700 is expected to ship in April 2008 with an MSRP of $149.99 (U.S). It comes with a standard 12V adaptor, user manual and wireless remote control.

Self Propelled Water Glider Draws Power from the Water

Friday, February 8th, 2008

For the latest info on the coolest gadgets, emerging technology and wired madness, subscribe to our full news feed or have it delivered to your inbox. Always free. Always unique. Thanks for visiting!

This seagoing glider is a particularly interesting piece of equipment. It is described as a “green robot” for the reason that it is powered entirely by the temperature fluctuations occurring at different depths in the water that it is used in. This gives it a limitless power source and an incredible lifespan. According to U.S. based researchers involved in the program:

They said the glider had crisscrossed the 13,000-feet-(4,000-meter-)deep Virgin Islands Basin between St. Thomas and St. Croix more than 20 times since it was launched in December.
And it could keep going on its own for another six months, the team at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Webb Research Corporation in Falmouth, Massachusetts, predicted.

Virtually limitless power, self propulsion, glider robots and it is not even April 1. It has all the properties of an outstanding host, except for the fact that it comes from a highly reputable source. This is a true engineering marvel and I hope it gets the recognition that it deserves.

Palm’s airport retail locations to remain open

Friday, February 8th, 2008

We recently learned that Palm was planning on closing all of their retail locations, that fact was even later confirmed by Palm, but it seems there may have been a little confusion. It turns out that those airport retail locations will indeed remain open, it seems they are not actually owned by Palm but by Airport Wireless.

Now rest assured next time you are stuck in that airport you will still be able to drop in and pick up that overpriced accessory or play with kill time with the latest Palm device until your flight leaves. There was a mention of the stores seeing some re-branding, so it may not be an official Palm store, but the stores will still remain.
