Looking for something with a hint of style to take up that empty expanse that is your bedside table? Peer no further than Tangent’s Cinque, which offers up DAB, FM and AM radio tuning within a compact (and fairly attractive) package. Besides pulling tunes from thin air, this unit also plays nice with CDs and any ole DAP you’ve got stuffed in your underused gadgets drawer courtesy of the built-in 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack. Furthermore, you can set the alarm to wake you with music, and just in case you’re not really feeling the hue shown above, it’s also available in walnut, black and red for £239.99 ($478).

EA’s CEO nonchalantly mentions “coming launch” of Rock Band for Wii

Finally got around to trading in that raincheck for your very own Wii? Good. Ready to pick up Rock Band? Believe it or not, we think we know that the aforementioned title is indeed headed to Nintendo’s darling — that’s according to EA’s CEO John Riccitiello, who was reportedly heard mentioning its “coming launch” on a recent conference call. Apparently, IGN even went the extra mile and pinged EA for additional confirmation (and got it), and while no details surrounding a release date, price or wicked new setlist were uncovered, at least you’ve got a few ticks to start scrounging up spare change.

Dynamic Life shirt clearly shows you’re taken by a fellow nerd

Oh sure, we’ve seen proximity-based clothing before, but for the couple who just can’t help but express their intense adoration for technology (and each other), we present the $24.99 8-bit Dynamic Life shirt. This wonderful piece of garb, which is obviously designed to be purchased in pairs, sports six whole hearts on the chest. When your lover strays, both sets of hearts slowly fade away, but when he / she comes running back for one more steamy round of Wii Boxing, the combined dozen lights up to signify precisely how geeky you two truly are. You do know what’s coming in a fortnight, right?

Sony introduces new digital photo frames

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Sony has made some significant announcements today, introducing three new digital photo frames. All the frames contain 800 x 480 WVGA displays with an aspect ratio of 15:9, and are capable of displaying pictures up to 48-megapixels in size. The 7-inch DPF-V700 and 9-inch DPF-V900 contain 512MB of internal storage, have built in Bluetooth, and HDMI outs. This is the first digital frame I’ve ever seen with an HDMI out and I wonder if that is a harbinger of things to come. A less expensive 7-inch DPF-D70 has 256MB of internal storage and loses the Bluetooth and HDMI out. All of the frames come with a remote and can utilize nearly every memory card style available. That’s another impressive move for a company not know for playing well with other companies formats. The DPF-V900, DPF-V700 and DPF-V700 digital photo frames will sell for $250, $190 and $140 and will be in stores in the spring.

GAMETECH’s Sound Shell bulks up your DS Lite, isn’t worth the trouble

You know how rough it is — trying to procure a couple of those Duke Xbox controllers for your man-sized paws. Thankfully, for folks such as yourself, GAMETECH’s busting out the Sound Shell, which takes the apparently dangerously small DS Lite and gives it plenty of fat. Besides adding on a pair of sure-to-be-booming speakers to the rear, this thing also provides a nifty storage nook for your earbuds and a totally necessary kickstand. You could blow ¥3,200 ($30) on this, or you could look a whole lot more hip by just picking up a similarly beefy Game Boy and kickin’ it old school.

Intel and Micron develop “world’s fastest” NAND — kiss SSD random write lag goodbye

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Posted Feb 1st 2008 3:01AM by Thomas Ricker
Filed under: StorageHow do 200MBps reads and 100MBps writes in a storage device sound to you? Pretty sweet if you ask us. That’s the upper spec for Micron’s new highspeed 8Gb (Gigabit not Gigabyte, kids) SLC NAND co-developed with Intel on a 50-nm processes node. Once slapped together in an SSD, you can expect performance to easily outshine any existing SSD or mechanical drive on the market while easily kicking the SSD bugbear — random read/writes — to the curb. The rub, of course, is that SLC NAND is more expensive than MLC so you can expect to pay dearly for that performance. Watch for the speedy Micron flash to pop in cellphones, camcorders, SSDs (and pretty much every portable consumer electronics device out there) sometime in the second half of 2008 — sampling now to manufacturers.

MacBook Air splayed — multi-touch trackpad controller chip same as iPhone

It’s that time of the product cycle again, the teardown. This time, iFixit’s applying the Xacto to Apple’s MacBook Air. Notable discoveries are an easy to disassemble chassis just big enough for Samsung’s 1.8-inch, 80GB disk but not the relatively chubby 160GB variety found in the iPod classic. They also found the new multi-touch trackpad using the same control chip as the iPod touch and iphone — the Broadcom BCM5974. That leaves Apple plenty of room to grow the gesture options via software updates. Want to remove the battery? Go ahead, 19 screw removals (in addition to Apple’s non-removable feebie) will get the job done. Mmm, silicon and aluminum carnage, smells like… victory. Now hit up that read link IEEE types, where it’s high-res all the time.

Samsung P2 firmware v3.07 now available

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable VideoFirmware version 3.07 just went live over at Samsung’s download center. This is the 2nd firmware update for Sammy’s slick little P2. Word on the street has it delivering on the promises already peeped in the video preview. Just be sure that you’re downloading the newest version as Sammy’s site seems to have cross-linked v3.07 with the older v2.08 download. Nevertheless, between this and the PSP 3.90 M33 release, our weekend is pretty much set.
