Apple posts $1.58 billion profit; reports best quarter ever

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Apple has posted some exciting news, their first quarter earnings have been the “best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history.” The first quarter earnings posted a revenue of $9.6 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.58 billion. These numbers are up from a revenue of $7.1 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1 billion during the same quarter in the previous year.

These record breaking numbers come from sales that included 2.3 million computers, 2.3 million iPhones and 22 million iPods during the quarter. While the market share of the Mac may not be what the PC holds, its very hard to argue that these are impressive numbers.

Palm Centro rumored to be heading to AT&T, T-Mobile

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

According to a few reports popping up lately, is seems that Palm is rumored to be preparing for the debut its red hot smartphone, the Centro, on AT&T and then T-Mobile. Palm’s three month exclusivity agreement with Sprint is ending, leaving the market wide open. The Palm Infocenter website reports that the 4Q release delay of the much anticipated 755p on Verizon makes it unclear whether the Centro will make its way there as well. Demand for the Centro has far exceeded Palm’s expectations. The $99 phone/PDA has been flying off the shelves, with the red version being especially popular. A pink version was recently released as well, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Nokia’s 7900 Cyrstal Prism could be worse

Eww, it’s back. Nokia’s 7900 Crystal Prism is now really, extra-super official with a scheduled Q1 2008 launch for €375 (before taxes and subsidies). Besides sporting a slight redesign from that earlier pic, we now know that the 7900 packs WCDMA 2100/850 in addition to those quad-GSM bands, 2-inch OLED, and 2 megapixel CMOS camera. But really, this one’s all about the look created by designer Frédérique Daubal. Yeah, us neither. “Renowned” enough for Nokia though, just not the 9.4 million pages of Wikipedia. See her “dress for tired people” after the break to see where this could have gone.

If you ever wondered what would happen if you took a pair of iPod earbuds and magnified them by 500 times, the fine people over at Fred’s has eliminated the guess work for you.
From the site:

Sometimes bigger IS really better, especially when it comes to sound.
That’s why we took a puny pair of earbuds, put them in Fred’s highly
technical Way Big machine, and created 500XL - it’s 500 times the size
of the original! How great will these look on your desktop alongside your
mp3 player or PC? 500XL includes a built-in amp and 3-way power -
it runs on batteries; you can connect it to your PC’s USB port with the
supplied cord; or plug it into the wall with a generic power supply
(not included). The stand-up, peggable clamshell packaging really
makes a statement.

AT&T now stating SIM-only option does not require a contract

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

AT&T has, after taking some criticism over just why they would require a contract from someone who was simply purchasing a SIM card have changed their story a bit.

According to AT&T, the SIM card does not require a contract, 2-year or otherwise. Which makes perfect sense, like I mentioned in the first post, why would someone have agreed to a 2-year agreement on a SIM, when they could get a shiny new phone for that same 2-year agreement. Its nice to see that this was just not true, its just funny because it was so clear on their website.

Cell phone bill on the rise? Check your SMS charges

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Posted Jan 23rd 2008 8:35AM by Joshua Topolsky
Filed under: Cellphones
If you’ve been paying attention to mobile carriers’ SMS pricing lately (and something tells us you haven’t) you’d be surprised to discover a fairly disturbing trend amongst providers: price hikes. Over the past year or so, nearly every major carrier in the US has raised their per-price cost of SMS messages, with Verizon and Sprint jacking up the fee from $0.15 to $0.20 a message, and AT&T and T-Mobile adding another nickel to their $0.10 charge. Of course, this trend of rising prices accompanies a major spike in the use of text messages amongst customers, with some surveys marking a 130-percent jump over SMS use since June 2006 — and telcos are taking it to the bank. What’s most insidious about the inflated costs is the fact that SMS data is particularly low-bandwidth, and analysts say that the price increases aren’t related to higher operating costs — these companies are simply gouging customers for a service which they have embraced. Companies say the hikes are meant to encourage customers to go for more expensive “bundles,” though we’re confident they won’t mention it when your Mom uses more messages than her plan allows and unwittingly pays a few extra bucks on her bill — that stuff adds up, you know?

Gizmondo to rise again in 2008?

var Oh cruel, cruel word… is it true? A teaser site for Gizmondo just appeared in the fetid bowels of the Internets boasting that the “legend is reborn.” A cruel hoax or has Sefan Eriksson, freshly sprung from the clink, really teamed up with former accomplice Carl Freer in a bid to resurrect Gizmondo as the Swedish press claims? If true, the service is set for a Christmas 2008 launch with the promise of a “Gizmondo Live Marketplace” presumably chock-full of open source games running on a supposed $100 device. Will it really “democratize gaming?” Hardly. No worries though, we’ll be too busy checking out the “exciting psychic worlds” to notice.

CSM’s Ultimate Gaming rig is pretty potent, cheap… in the UK

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Posted Jan 23rd 2008 6:31AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Desktops, GamingEvery so often, we get wind of a mysterious gaming rig that’s so powerful, so mighty, that the entire world just has to see it. Unfortunately for most, this particular one will remain a pipe dream, primarily due to the UK’s impeccably strong pound and America’s woefully weak dollar. Nevertheless, those shacked up on the other side of the pond can grab Computer Supermarket’s (we know, we know) Ultimate Gaming rig, which is home to an Intel Q6600 quad-core CPU, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, a 750GB SATA II hard drive, NVIDIA’s 512MB 8600GT graphics card, a dual-layer DVD burner, 22-inch LCD, Windows Vista, keyboard / mouse and a fairly decent assortment of ports. All this pizazz can be yours for just £938.83 if you’re in the right place, but for $1,829, we’ll probably look elsewhere over here.

handheld nintendo emulator goes solar

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

This portable gaming beast not only plays games from three classic Nintendo systems, it runs on the power of the sun. Out of the box, the player can handle NES/Famicom, Gameboy and Gameboy Color titles, as long as you can get the ROMs transfered to an SD card. Of course, I won’t tell you how to do that, but that’s what search engines are for, right?

In addition to taking on retro gaming sans batteries, the Mobile Power Station plays popular audio and video files, including MP3, WMA and MP4 (converted to AVI) formats. The compact player features a 3.5 color display, 2GB of built-in memory and an SD slot for up to 2GB more. The jack-of-all-trades can also display or speak E-books, has a voice recorder, and even a built-in LED flashlight. Heck, it’s even got a USB-out connector so you can use the solar panels to charge other devices.

So what are you waiting for? You can grab one yours gadget importer Chinavasion for about $123 USD.
